WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CLOSES 2022 WITH COMEBACK WIN OVER ADELPHI, 68-60

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team closed 2022 with a victory yesterday as they defeated Adelphi University by a final score of 68-60.  The Dolphins improve to 5-8 with the win and conclude a four-game stretch of non-conference games with a record of 2-2.  The Panthers saw their three-game win streak come to an end and fall to 6-5 on the season with the loss.

Both teams both came out strong in a fast-paced, high-scoring opening quarter that saw the two sides combine for 40 points and six made threes.  Five of those makes from beyond the arc belonged to the Dolphins and three of those five makes were by Gia Esposito.  The second quarter saw less scoring as both teams only shot well under 40% from the field.  The Dolphins were also just 2-10 from three-point range and were being outrebounded by a wide margin through 20 minutes.  However, CSI maintained a distinct advantage in points off of turnovers that allowed them to stay close and they trailed by just one point, 36-35, at halftime.

Following the intermission, the Dolphins once again struggled through a third quarter scoring drought that led to a deficit of as many as eight points.  The deficit prompted a timeout by the CSI bench and a series of adjustments that allowed CSI to surge ahead in the closing minutes of the third.  After falling behind 46-38, the Dolphins took the lead behind a turnover-fueled 9-0 run during which the final seven points were all scored by Jenalyse Alarcon.  The Panthers would briefly regain the lead, but the Dolphins ultimately led by two after 30 minutes.  In the fourth, the game was tied at 56 with under five minutes to play, but an 8-0 CSI run gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the game.  Eight points in the final frame from Kaia Johnson helped the Dolphins seal the eight-point win, 68-60.

Alarcon led the way for CSI in scoring with 16 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Behind her strong fourth quarter effort, Johnson finished with 14.  Both Esposito and Ashley Lambert finished with 11.  It was a huge game for Jenna Jordan on the Adelphi side as she registered a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double while shooting 8-11.  However, she committed 8 of the 22 Adelphi turnovers that allowed CSI to remain close and ultimately win the game.  The Panthers held a 35-22 advantage on the glass and scored 13 second chance points to CSI's 7, but the Dolphins scored 32 points off of Adelphi turnovers, many of those coming during their scoring run in the third quarter.  Following a hot shooting start, it was the CSI defense that earned them the win in their final game of 2022.

The Dolphins will be back on their home floor for a pair of games next weekend beginning with a conference matchup against Daemen University on Friday night at 5:30.  They will then host D'Youville on Sunday at 1:00 as the team begins a crucial portion of their schedule filled with conference games.
