DOLPHINS STRUGGLE FOR OFFENSE IN LOSS TO WILDCATS, 64-45

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team returned to conference play earlier tonight and was defeated by the Daemen University Wildcats by a final score of 64-45.  The Dolphins fall to 5-9 with the loss and are now 1-3 against the East Coast Conference.  The Wildcats improved to 9-2 on the year with the win and move to 4-1 in conference play.

The Dolphins got off to a solid start in the game and connected on three early three-pointers in the opening minutes of the first quarter.  The last of those three triples was made by Gia Esposito and gave the Dolphins a one-point lead, 11-10, five minutes into the game.  From there, the Wildcats seized control behind lights out shooting and stifling defense.  Daemen ended the quarter on a 13-2 run that included six points from Alahna Paige and five Dolphins turnovers.  Things didn't get much better for the Dolphins in the second quarter as they fell behind by as many as eighteen points, 33-15.  However, the Dolphins ended the quarter with six consecutive points to cut the deficit to a manageable twelve points.

Just as they did in the first half, the Dolphins got off to a good start in the second half and pulled back to within single-digits four minutes into the third quarter.  The Dolphins defense held the Wildcats to just one made field goal for over five minutes to start the second half, but CSI was only able to score five points during that stretch.  Despite a good defensive effort, the Dolphins saw the deficit grow to fourteen at the end of three quarters.  The Wildcats proceeded to put the game away with a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter, and the Dolphins were once again held to under 15 points in a quarter in the final period.

No Dolphin scored in double-figures in the game and Kyra Rose led CSI with 9 points, five of which came from the free-throw line.  The Dolphins shot just above 28% in the game, but their defense kept them within striking distance during the second and third quarters.  However, the Wildcats shot 53% in the first and 62% in the fourth while outscoring the Dolphins by a combined 15 points in those two periods.  Paige Emborsky and Mickayla Ivy each scored 14 points to lead Daemen, and Marina Maerkl added 10 points off of the Wildcats bench.

The Dolphins will be right back in action on Sunday when they take on D'Youville University at The Tank.  Once again, their game will open up the conference doubleheader featuring both the men and women.  Tip off will be at 1:00 PM.
