Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Indoor Track & Field Team opened their season with a very impressive showing yesterday as they participated in the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational. The event, which was hosted by Division I St. John's University at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, marked the debut of many new Dolphins as well as the return of other CSI athletes who were looking to build upon their performances from last season.  Competing alongside several Division I programs including St. John's, Temple, Fordham, Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and Long Island University, the Dolphins set a total of six new school records across a variety of events.

For the CSI women, Skylar Pointer, who was the team's Rookie of the Year last season, opened her sophomore campaign by shattering the CSI Women's Shot Put record by 3 feet.  Her toss of 10.91 meters was not only a record-breaking effort but it was also good for 10th place overall.  Pointer finished 10th in the Weight Throw as well.  However, Pointer was not the only Dolphin to perform a toss better than the previous Shot Put record.  Freshman Aryanna Finkelstein also surpassed the former record with a toss of 10.24 meters and achieved a distance of 10.18 meters in the Weight Throw.

Another CSI record was set by the CSI women in the High Jump by Jazmine Severo who hit 1.50 meters in the event.  This mark was good for a spot in the overall top eight overall for Severo making her the only non-Division I athlete to rank in the top eight.   Ava Thompson and Rebecca Andes rounded out a strong effort for the Dolphins on the women's side.  Thompson led the CSI women with a toss of 12.06 meters in the Weight Throw while Andes hit a personal-best 10.58 meters in the same event.

The men set multiple records in the meet as well beginning with freshman Columbus Enslen's performance in the Men's Long Jump and Triple Jump events.  Enslen easily surpassed the previous records with a 6.08 meter Long Jump and an 11.84 meter Triple Jump.  Kevin Hasty also surpassed the previous Shot Put record by a wide margin with a toss of 11.31 meters, good for 9th overall.  Hasty also broke the men's Weight Throw record with a toss of 11.25 meters.  On the track, Muhammed Qadri led the way for the CSI men with a time of 2:49.54 in the 1000m.

Associate Head Coach James Luginsland was very proud of the his team's performance in the midst of a difficult time for the program.  "Our team overcame a lot of adversity this semester, said Luginsland. "They were very tough and resilient today and I am very proud of them and grateful for what they have done so far."

While the Associate Head Coach was very pleased with his team's performance in today's meet and appreciative of their effort, he and the CSI athletes believe there is much more to look forward to when their meet schedule resumes next month.  Speaking of what to expect from his team the rest of the way he said, "We will continue to, both individually and as a team, aspire to accomplish what we know what we are capable of achieving."

The Dolphins will have over a month off ahead of their next meet.  CSI Indoor Track & Field will next be in action on Friday, January 13th when they participate in the Spartan Invitational hosted by fellow East Coast Conference program St. Thomas Aquinas College.
