Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball team fell to Mercy College tonight, 61-44. The Dolphins held strong throughout the first half, but the Mavs found a rhythm in the second half and never looked back. The Dolphins are now on a five-game losing streak. They sit at 6-19 on the year and fall to 4-13 in conference play. The opposing Mavericks improve to 11-14 and 9-8 in ECC play.
KEY MOMENTS
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Behind some solid offensive play from Mercy, CSI found themselves down 10-6 at the first stoppage of play with 3:44 to go in the first quarter. The Dolphins would cut the lead to just one at the end of the first, 11-10. They took their first lead early in the second. CSI built up a 14-11 advantage. Midway through the second quarter both teams were knotted at 14. Both teams really struggled to score. Out of a timeout, the Dolphins and Mavericks traded threes. Mercy began to gain some rhythm as they ripped off a 6-1 scoring run going into halftime to take a five-point lead, 23-18. The Mavs came out of the break on fire. They would open up a 13-point advantage behind a 10-2 run, 33-20. The Dolphins responded with a 10-5 run of their own, cutting the lead to just eight, 38-30. The Mavericks would close the third up by 10, 42-32. CSI had trouble finding the mark, and Mercy found themselves up 17 with four minutes to go in the contest, 51-34. Unfortunately, the Dolphins were never able to gain any ground. They lost to the Mavericks 61-44.

The Dolphins had another rough shooting performance tonight. They shot only 29% from the field, 8% from three, and 58% from the free throw line. The deciding factor came in the free-throw disparity. The Mavericks converted on 10 more free throws than the Dolphins (21-11). CSI was also plagued by turnovers, as they gave the ball up 20 times. Despite the victory, Mercy College was mediocre from the floor as well. They shot 32% from the field, 38% from three, and 84% from the line.
DOLPHIN OF THE GAME
Kristina Arvelo and
Noemia Massingue were pivotal for the Dolphins tonight. Arvelo scored a team-high nine points and grabbed down three rebounds. Massingue controlled the boards for CSI as she secured 10 rebounds. She also added three assists and one block to go along with her five points.
