Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL SHORT IN FIRST-EVER MEETING WITH FRANKLIN PIERCE, 77-69

Rindge, NH - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team came up short earlier tonight in their first-ever meeting with Franklin Pierce University as they lost to the Ravens by a final score of 77-69.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 5-12 on the season and the Ravens improve to 10-7 with the victory.

Three-point shooting was key for the Dolphins in the game, and after falling behind by two early, the Dolphins took the lead on back-to-back threes by Bryce Waterman and Luis Armas.  These two threes were the first of six consecutive Dolphins field goals that came from beyond the arc.  Waterman added another for the third, Messiah Mallory connected on the fourth, Waterman hit his third triple for the fifth, and Chris Velasquez delivered the sixth.  Despite the great start from the outside, the Velasquez three put the Dolphins ahead by just three.  Moments later, the Dolphins would go ahead by five, but the rest of the half belonged to the Ravens.  Franklin Pierce ended the half on a 13-5 run and took a three-point, 32-29, lead into the intermission.

The strong outside shooting continued for the Dolphins in the second half, but CSI would never lead again in the game.  The Dolphins trailed by as many as 18 with ten minutes remaining and it was here that CSI would begin a late comeback bid.  Three straight threes by Waterman and a fourth by Velasquez propelled the Dolphins right back into the game entering the final minutes and CSI pulled to within eight.  However, the comeback attempt would fizzle out here as the Ravens had built too much of a lead to overcome.  The Dolphins would get as close as six in the closing seconds, but the Ravens held on for the 77-69 victory.

Waterman led the Dolphins in scoring with 20 points, 18 of those coming on three-pointers.  He finished the game shooting 6-14 from downtown and attempted more than half of CSI's 27 threes.  No other Dolphin attempted more than four threes, but Mallory and Velasquez connected on two each.  The Dolphins had four players score in double figures including Waterman, Mallory, Velasquez and Jordan McAllister.  For McAllister, tonight marks the fourth time in five games he has scored in double-figures since his CSI debut.  Every Raven that entered the game scored led by a pair of double-digit scorers.  The first was Mohamed Traore who scored 15 points followed by Wol Maiwen who finished with 12.  Sean Bresnan also finished the game two points shy of a double-double with 8 points and 11 boards.  The Dolphins shot far better than the Ravens from the outside, but the difference in the game was ultimately free-throw attempts.  CSI went to the line just four times all game while the Ravens attempted 25 free-throws.

The Dolphins will be back in action against Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday as they begin a five-game stretch of games against the East Coast Conference.
