Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CAN'T GET PAST ROBERTS WESLEYAN IN CLOSING MINUTES OF 87-81 LOSS

Rochester, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team faced Roberts Wesleyan University this afternoon in a key conference matchup and fell to the Redhawks by a final score of 87-81.  The Dolphins are now 5-13 on the season following the defeat and are 3-5 against the East Coast Conference.  The win for the Redhawks improves their overall record to 7-10 and they are now above the .500 mark in conference play with a record of 5-4.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going and neither side led by more than four until there were just over six minutes remaining before halftime.  After trailing 20-18, an 8-0 Dolphins run put CSI ahead by six at the 6:22 mark in the first half.  The Dolphins would go ahead by as many as seven, 29-22, but the Redhawks countered with an 8-0 run of their own to take a one-point lead.  Roberts Wesleyan would go in front by as many as four, but the Dolphins would pull to within one on a Bryce Waterman three-pointer heading into the intermission.

Coming out of halftime Roberts Wesleyan would jump out to their largest lead of the game to that point, five, but the Dolphins answered with a 9-0 run to go back ahead by four.  Waterman connected on two more three-pointers during the CSI scoring run and finished the game with five triples.  After a Waterman three put the Dolphins ahead with just over seventeen minutes to play, CSI stayed in front for another four minutes.  However, the Redhawks would take the lead at the 13:03 mark on an Abou Gbane three and would never trail again.  Roberts Wesleyan would go ahead by as many as eight, 68-60, but the Dolphins battled back in the closing minutes to even up the score at 70 with four minutes remaining.  A pair of threes, one by Luis Armas and another from Waterman, made it a one-point game on two separate occasions, but the Dolphins were never able to get the lead back.  Key stops in the final two minutes by the Redhawks closed out CSI as the Dolphins went cold from the field and the Redhawks escaped with an 87-81 win.

Jordan McAllister led the Dolphins in scoring with 18 points and once again was very efficient from the field finishing 6-12.  Waterman scored 15, all on three-pointers, and shot 5-14 from beyond the arc.  Messiah Mallory attempted a season-low six shots and finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds.  The final Dolphin in double-figures was Armas who finished with 12 and shot 4-7 from downtown.  Nicholas Johnson had a huge game for the Redhawks with a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double.  Gbane and Malik Brooks also finished in double-figures with 16 and 15 points respectively.  Overall, the Dolphins held a distinct advantage in shooting, but they could not overcome the disparity in points off of turnovers.  The Redhawks scored 22 points off of CSI's giveaways while the Dolphins scored just 9 off of Roberts Wesleyan turnovers.

The Dolphins will be back on the road against Mercy College on Wednesday before returning home for Alumni Day on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas College.
