DOLPHINS OUTLAST REDHAWKS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN BEHIND SEASON-HIGH FROM ALARCON

Rochester, NY -  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team picked up their second straight win against the East Coast Conference earlier today as they defeated Roberts Wesleyan University by a final score of 59-56.  The Dolphins improve to 7-11 on the season and have inserted themselves back into the middle of the playoff picture with a 3-5 mark against the conference.  The Redhawks fall to 3-13 on the year with the loss and are now 2-7 in conference play.

Dana Phelan got her fourth start of the season for the Dolphins in today's game and opened the game with eight early points, six coming from beyond the arc.  Elizabeth Lofaro added five points of her own to account for the rest of the Dolphins first thirteen points.  The Redhawks would get as close as one in the opening period, but CSI took a four-point lead into the second.  Jenalyse Alarcon opened the second with her lone three to put the Dolphins ahead by seven, and this basket would be her first in a 25-point, 11-rebound effort.  Following the Alarcon three, Noemia Massingue scored the next six Dolphins points and CSI led 25-17.  After nearly 3 minutes without a basket for both teams, the Dolphins closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to take 36-24 lead into halftime.

Phelan opened the second half with a basket for the Dolphins, but this would be the only score for over three minutes at the start of the third quarter.  From here, the Dolphins would go in front 40-27 on a pair of Alarcon free-throws, but the Redhawks then seized control of the game.  Roberts Wesleyan closed the period on an 11-2 run to make it a four-point game entering the final frame.  The Redhawks quickly pulled to within one at the start of the fourth, but Alarcon was able to keep the Dolphins in front the rest of the way.  CSI would go ahead by as many as eight with 3:39 to play, but Roberts Wesleyan got as close as one in the closing seconds.  Alarcon would put CSI ahead by three on a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining, and the Redhawks proceeded to miss a potential game-tying three at the buzzer.

Alarcon had her best game of the season for the Dolphins in the win finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds.  This was good for her fifth double-double of the year and a season-high in points.  Phelan was CSI's second-leading scorer with 12, eight coming in the game's opening minutes.  Lofaro finished with 9 and Massingue finished with 8 in a game where no Dolphins reserve played more than 12 minutes.  Paris Anthony had a big fourth quarter for the Redhawks and finished the game their leading scorer with 18 points.  Georgia Haverlock finished with a 15-point 12-rebound double-double in 32 minutes off the bench as well.  Unlike the Dolphins who played their starters for most of the game, the Redhawks bench saw extensive minutes and scored 33 points overall.  However, this was not enough to overcome CSI's 12-point halftime lead as the Redhawks fell just short in the closing seconds.

Now firmly back in the East Coast Conference playoff picture, the Dolphins have a pair of huge ECC matchups looming next week.  First, the Dolphins will face Mercy College on the road this Wednesday before returning home to face St. Thomas Aquinas College at The Tank on January 28th.
