Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL TO MAVERICKS IN LOW-SCORING AFFAIR, 51-36

Dobbs Ferry, NY -  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team struggled for offense in their game against Mercy College earlier tonight as they lost to the Mavericks by a final score of 51-36.  The Dolphins fall to 7-12 with the defeat and are now 3-5 against the East Coast Conference.  The Mavericks improve to 13-6 with the win and are now 7-2 in conference play.

The two teams traded baskets through the game's first seven minutes, but from there the Dolphins offense went cold and the Mavericks went on a 12-0 run that extended into the second quarter.  Kyra Rose snapped the CSI scoring drought with an and-one to pull CSI back to within nine, but the Dolphins went into the half trailing by double-figures, 26-15.  The Dolphins shot just 20% in the first half and the Mavericks were able to build their lead behind 7-12 shooting in the second quarter.

The second half saw Mercy score the first nine points which increased their lead to twenty, but the CSI offense came to life late in the third and the Dolphins trimmed the lead back down to fifteen.  Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the eleven points they scored in the third quarter accounted for their highest scoring quarter of the game.  Ultimately holding the Mavericks to only 51 points, the Dolphins scored just 10 in the final quarter on their way to a 51-36 defeat.

No Dolphins scored in double-figures or shot over the 50% mark and the team shot an uncharacteristically low 26% from the field.  The CSI bench also played big minutes tonight after being used sparingly against Roberts Wesleyan last time out, and reserves Gia Esposito and Rose led the Dolphins with 9 points each.  Angelina Barerra had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Mavericks and Kellie Nudd added another 11-points to account for nearly half of the Mavericks scoring.  Mercy surprisingly managed to win the game by fifteen without connecting on a single three-pointer in the game, but once again it was the Mavericks defense that helped them secure the win.

The Dolphins will be in need of a critical conference win when they return home for a matchup with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at The Tank.  With Men's Basketball hosting their annual alumni game, the women will play second in Saturday's doubleheader.  Tip-off against the Spartans will be at approximately 3 PM.
