GAMEDAY: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GOES FOR SEASON SWEEP OF MERCY

1/25/2023 8:00:00 AM

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team plays their sixth straight game against the East Coast Conference tonight when they face the Mercy College Mavericks on the road at 5 PM.  The Dolphins enter action 7-11 on the season and are 3-5 in conference play.  The Mavericks come into today's game 12-6 on the season and are 6-2 against the ECC.  The Dolphins earned their first win against Mercy in the history of the program earlier this season when they defeated the Mavericks at the Tank in November of last year.

The Dolphins were last in action on Saturday against Roberts Wesleyan University in need of a conference win to invigorate their playoff hopes.  Leading for much of the game, the Dolphins briefly fell behind late before closing out a 59-56 win.  Jenalyse Alarcon led the way for the Dolphins in crunch time finishing with a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double.  The Mavericks also last played on Saturday and narrowly defeated Queens College 60-58 for their seventh straight win.  The Mavericks have lost just once since being defeated by the Dolphins earlier this season.

Following her big game on Saturday, Alarcon was named Co-Player of the Week in the East Coast Conference.  This marks the second conference accolade she has received this year following a Defensive Player of the Week nod earlier in the season.  She is now averaging nearly 12 points and just shy of 9 rebounds on the season leading the Dolphins in both categories.  CSI's second-leading scorer Ashley Lambert came off the bench for the Dolphins on Saturday in a game which saw CSI make significant changes to their rotation.  Lambert was the only reserve to play more than ten minutes as the starting five of Alarcon, Kaia Johnson, Noemia Massingue, Elizabeth Lofaro, and Dana Phelan all played at least 28 minutes.  Katie Wall and Taysha Bender are both scoring in double-figures for the Mavericks this season averaging 14.3 and 11.2 points per game respectively.  However, the Mavericks have struggled from the field and are shooting only 36% from the floor and 28% from beyond the arc.  Despite poor shooting, the Mavericks have won the turnover and rebounding battles on a per-game basis and are allowing only 57 points per game on the season.  In the November 30th meeting with the Dolphins Mercy allowed 71 points, the second-highest point total against the Mavericks this season.

Gametime - 5:00 PM
Location - Dobbs Ferry, NY
All-Time Series - Mercy leads, 2-1
Last Meeting - 11/30/22:  CSI won, 71-67
