Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS OFFENSE GOES COLD IN MIDDLE QUARTERS OF LOSS TO SPARTANS

Staten Island, NY -  The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team started strong in today's game against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, but their offense went cold in the middle quarters of a 70-46 loss.  The Dolphins drop to 7-13 with the defeat and their playoff chances took a hit as they fall to 3-7 against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans move to to 16-5 with the win and are now 8-2 in conference play.

Neither team opened the game shooting the ball well from the outside, but both offenses were able to find other ways to score in the opening quarter.  With the game tied at 15 in the closing seconds of the quarter, Kaia Johnson connected on a buzzer-beater to put the Dolphins ahead 17-15 after ten minutes.  Following a strong finish to the first period, the Dolphins offense went ice cold at the midway point of the second.  With CSI ahead 24-22, a go-ahead three-pointer by Erin Leary put St. Thomas Aquinas ahead for good.  The Spartans would go on a 10-1 run ahead of halftime beginning with that basket and took a seven-point lead into the intermission.

The Spartans then spent most of the second half slowly growing their lead and the Dolphins were never any closer than five in the final twenty minutes of the game.  After scoring 17 points in the first, the Dolphins were held to just 8 in the second and 4 in the third.  Trailing by twenty after the third quarter, the Dolphins matched their first quarter scoring output in the fourth, but the Spartans scored 21 in the final period to pick up a 24-point victory.

Following a strong effort at the offensive end in the fourth quarter, Ashley Lambert finished the game with 19 points to lead the Dolphins.  Jenalyse Alarcon finished with a season-high 15 rebounds and only attempted five shots, making two of them.  Lambert and Alarcon were the only two Dolphins to register more than one made basket in the game as the CSI offense struggled for most of the game beyond the opening quarter.  Four Spartans scored in double-figures led by Sarah Ericson with 18 and Alexa Huertas with 12.  Ericson registered a double-double as well adding 12 rebounds to go along with her 18 points.  She also had 4 steals in a game which saw the two teams combine for 40 turnovers.  After a very slow start shooting for both sides, it was ultimately the Spartans that found their shooting stroke, and that proved to be the difference in the game.  STAC finished shooting 41% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc while the Dolphins shot 23% from the floor and 23% from distance in the game.

The Dolphins will have six days off before embarking on a road trip that will take them upstate for a pair of weekend conference games.  The first will be played on Friday against Daemen University and the second will be played one week from tomorrow against D'Youville.
