GAMEDAY: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS TO REMAIN IN PLAYOFF HUNT HEADING INTO MATCHUP WITH SPARTANS

1/28/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team looks to remain alive in the East Coast Conference playoff hunt as they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at The Tank today at 3 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game 7-12 on the year and are 3-6 in conference play.  The Spartans enter today's game 15-5 on the year and are 7-2 against the ECC.  The Spartans have won all three meetings between the two sides since the start of the 2020-2021 season with CSI's only win coming in the 1982-1983 season.

The Dolphins last played on Wednesday night against Mercy College and struggled for offense throughout the game in a 51-36 loss.  The Spartans were last in action on Wednesday as well and picked up their seventh conference win of the season over the University of the District of Columbia, 62-53.  The victory was also the fourth straight for the Spartans.

Reigning East Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week Jenalyse Alarcon remains the leading scorer and rebounder for the Dolphins and is also the only Dolphin averaging over 10 points per game.  She also leads the Dolphins in shooting at over 52% from the field and is the only Dolphin shooting above 50% on the year.  The only other Dolphin shooting above 40% is Kyra Rose who has connected on just shy of 45% of her attempts from the field.  After a solid start to the season from the outside, CSI's three-point shooting is down to 31%.  From beyond the arc, Elizabeth Lofaro has been the most efficient shooter for the Dolphins by far with a 50% mark from downtown.

Sophomores Erin Leary and Sarah Ericson lead the Spartans in scoring averaging 15.8 and 12.6 points per game respectively.  They are also the top two rebounders for a Spartans team that has done a solid job on the glass this year.  Like the Dolphins, the Spartans are shooting around 40% from the field and 30% from three-point range as a team.  In the meeting earlier this season, the Spartans had one of their better shooting performances of the year and defeated the Dolphins by 23.
