Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

STRONG SECOND HALF NOT ENOUGH TO PUSH DOLPHINS PAST D'YOUVILLE IN 57-52 DEFEAT

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team wrapped up their homestand with a loss earlier today as they fell to the D'Youville University Saints, 57-52.  The Dolphins fall to 5-10 on the season with the defeat and are now 1-4 against the East Coast Conference.  The Saints are now 4-8 following the win and improve to 3-3 in conference play.

It was a very slow start for both offenses as the two teams combined for 17 points in the opening quarter on 7-33 shooting.  Things didn't get any better for the Dolphins offensively in the second quarter as their shooting struggles continued with 3-11 shooting.  On the other side, the Saints shot 75% in the second and scored 23 points to the Dolphins eight.  This put CSI behind 12 at the break and would force them to play from behind double-figures at the half for the second consecutive game.

The Dolphins immediately pulled withing eight coming out of halftime with four quick points for Jenalyse Alarcon, but they would fall behind by as many as 12 on two separate occasions in the third quarter after that.  CSI would eventually close the quarter with a Kaia Johnson three-pointer that would bring them within six for the first time in the second half.  Johnson would also open the fourth quarter with an and-one to cut the Saints lead in half before a Dana Phelan three made it a two-point game with 7:36 to play.  The Dolphins then took the lead for the first time since the opening quarter on an Ashley Lambert three with under seven minutes to play, but CSI would never lead again after that.  The Saints responded with a 7-0 run to go in front by six, but the Dolphins would get as close as two with under 30 seconds remaining in the game.  However, the Saints were able to close out the game from the free-throw line handing the Dolphins their second straight loss.

Alarcon was the only Dolphin to score 10 points in the game and Johnson finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.  Sofie Fuglsang led the Saints with 13 points and Stella Mollica had 11.  Anna Jonkovic, the team's leading rebounder entering the game, added 14 more boards to her stat line.  Ultimately, the deciding factor in the game was the shooting of the two teams.  After a very poor start, CSI finished shooting 35% from the field overall and 35% from beyond the arc.  The Saints shot 41% from the field and 42% from three-point range in the game and outscored CSI both in the paint and off of turnovers.

The Dolphins will return to action on Wednesday when they face Queens College on the road.  The Dolphins are then back home on Saturday when they will host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Alumni Day.
