DOLPHINS EARN FIRST DIVISION II POSTSEASON BERTH WITH 1-0 WIN OVER MOLLOY

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team earned the first Division II postseason berth in the history of the program earlier today as they defeated Molloy University in a head-to-head battle for the sixth and final conference playoff spot by a final score of 1-0.  The Dolphins finished the season 4-6-4 and 2-3-3 against the ECC.  The loss sends the Lions to 3-11-3 and they end the season 2-5-1 in conference play.  The win is also the first for the Dolphins against Molloy University in the history of the Men's Soccer program.

Miguel Espinosa continued his impressive first season with the Dolphins as he put CSI in front to stay with a goal in the fourth minute of the match.  Michael Garcia got the attacking play started by advancing the ball up the sideline before finding Espinosa just outside the box.  CSI's leading goal-scorer then did the rest as he worked through three separate defenders before scoring on a left-footed shot from in close.  The Lions best chance in the half would come soon after on a giveaway by CSI goalkeeper Amari Thompson, but Thompson was able to make up for his mistake was a big save on a shot from close range.  The Dolphins went on to finish the half with a 5-3 advantage in shots and maintained their 1-0 lead entering the break.

Following halftime, the Lions would generate several scoring chances, but not one of them yielded a shot on goal.  Meanwhile, the Dolphins kept the pressure on Molloy throughout the half and added four more shots, three on target.  Though the Lions played many balls deep into the penalty area toward goal, Thompson repeatedly snatch those chances out of the air.  The Lions would finish the half with just two shots and the Dolphins would close out a one-goal victory.

The CSI win propels the Dolphins past Molloy in the conference standings and sends them to the East Coast Conference playoffs for the first time.  The Dolphins will open the postseason on Wednesday as they travel a short distance to Flushing for a first round matchup with Queens College.  The Lions are eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
