STRONG FOURTH QUARTER PROPELS DOLPHINS PAST BRIDGEPORT IN SEASON-OPENER

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team opened their season with a victory earlier today as they won a thriller over the University of Bridgeport by a final score of 59-56.  The CSI win gives them a 1-0 start and evens the all-time series with the Purple Knights at two games apiece.  Bridgeport opens their season with a loss as they were defeated by the Dolphins for the first time since the 2021-2022 season when the teams were both part of the East Coast Conference.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as neither side scored double-digits in the opening quarter.  The Dolphins scored for the first time nearly three minutes into the game and took their first lead with just over three minutes to go in the opening quarter.  However, neither team would score again until the final minute of the quarter and the Purple Knights held a 9-8 lead after one.  The Dolphins put together their first run of the game behind consecutive threes from Dana Phelan and Elizabeth Lofaro early in the second and briefly regained the lead, but the Purple Knights quickly responded with four straight points to go back in front.  The Dolphins then ended the period scoring six of the final eight points to go into halftime ahead 23-22.

Jenalyse Alarcon got the Dolphins off to a strong start in the third with five straight points, but the quarter ended up seeing the Dolphins get outscored 20-14.  After tying the game at 33, the Purple Knights scored 9 of the last 13 points in the period, and Bridgeport took a five-point advantage into the fourth.  Stephanie McBride opened the final quarter with a layup to give her team their largest lead of the game, seven points, but from there, the Dolphins came to life at both ends of the floor. The CSI run began with consecutive turnovers forced at the defensive end, each leading to a CSI basket, a Lofaro layup and a Phelan three-pointer.  Now trailing by two, consecutive turnovers once again led to back-to-back baskets, this time for Alarcon, and the Dolphins went ahead by two, 48-46.  Pehlan extended that lead to five with her fourth three moments later, and an Alarcon and-one put the Dolphins ahead by eight.  The CSI lead was cut to one on two separate occasions in the final minute, but each time the Dolphins answered with points as they held on for the 59-56 win.

Alarcon and Phelan led the Dolphins in scoring with 14 and Phelan finished the game 4-9 from beyond the arc.  Noemia Massignue added 8 points and 12 rebounds in the winning effort which was powered in large part by CSI's effort at the defensive end.  The Dolphins forced 24 turnovers and McBride was one of only two Purple Knight to surpass 8 points in the game.  McBride did finish with 21 points and 17 rebounds, but even that wasn't enough to get her team past the Dolphins and their spirited comeback effort in the fourth.

The Purple Knights will face Franklin Pierce University tomorrow at 1 PM in the opening game of the day.  The Dolphins will then wrap up the 2023 Women's Basketball Conference Challenge when they take on Holy Family University at 3 PM.
