Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF JEFFERSON IN CLOSING SECONDS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team picked up their second consecutive win earlier tonight as they held on in the closing seconds to defeat the Jefferson Rams by a final score of 78-75.  The Dolphins even their record at 2-2 with the victory while the Rams fall to 1-3 through their first four games.  The win for the Dolphins comes in the fourth of five straight home games to open the season, and the win is their first in three games against regionally-ranked opponents this year.

For the second straight game the Dolphins got off to a slow start, and CSI fell behind by as many as seven in the opening minutes.  However, the outside shooting of Aaron Goldstein propelled the Dolphins back into the game and CSI quickly pulled to within one.  Despite the hot start for Goldstein, the Rams were able to fend off the early surge by the Dolphins led by 15 first-half points from Antonin Kemkeng.  A 12-2 CSI run put the Dolphins ahead by four, but Jefferson would go in front by as many as five in the closing minutes of the first half.  Kemkeng would go on to score 15 before halftime, but Goldstein would match him with a go-ahead three just ahead of the buzzer.  The CSI freshman also finished the half with 15, and the Dolphins went into the locker room leading 47-44.

The two teams traded baskets to open the second half, but the Dolphins were able to take their first double-digit lead of the game behind a 7-0 run.  This would be CSI's largest lead of the game, but the lead would not stand for long.  The Rams seized the lead back behind a 13-0 run to go in front by four, but the Dolphins were able to respond with several big shots down the stretch.  With five minutes to play, Messiah Mallory connected on a game-tying three to even the score at 72.  Bryce Waterman then connected on another go-ahead jumper followed by a third CSI go-ahead bucket by Jordan McAllister with 1:49 remaining.  One minute later, McAllister delivered another huge shot to put the Dolphins in front by three, and the CSI closed out the win from there.  Two defensive stops in the final minute denied the Rams a game-tying score, and the Dolphins held on to win by a final score of 78-75.

Goldstein led the Dolphins with 18 points, Waterman had 14, and Mallory had 11.  Michael Oyekanmi added 10 points off the bench in just 18 minutes, and the Dolphins shot 11-20 as a team from beyond the arc alongside 47% from the field.  Despite 22 points from Kemkeng and another 20 points from Erik Timko, the Rams could not overcome an 8-31 effort from three-point range, and the CSI defense held Jefferson just shy of 44% shooting.

The Dolphins are back home on Tuesday as part of a non-conference doubleheader when they face Georgian Court University at 7:30 PM.  It will be the last of five games on their season-opening homestand.
