Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS WIN CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST MOLLOY BEHIND SECOND HALF COMEBACK, 89-86

Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team worked their way back from a 13-point deficit to defeat Molloy University in their conference opener earlier tonight, 89-86.  The Dolphins improve to 4-3 with the win and begin conference play with a 1-0 record against the ECC.  The Lions fall to 1-6 on the year and are 0-1 in conference play.

The Dolphins fell behind 5-0 to open the game and Molloy was able to extend their lead to double-digits just over 7 minutes into the first half.  Just two minutes later, the Lions increased their lead to 13 points, their largest lead of the game.  However, eight straight points from Chris Clancy served as the beginning of a turnaround for the Dolphins offensively, and the CSI defense would soon follow on the other side of halftime.  The Dolphins got a strong offensive effort in the closing minutes of the first half from Blake Wilson who went on to finish the game with a career-high 13 points, but CSI still trailed by 11 at the break.

After allowing 51 points in the first half, the CSI defense was able to slow down Molloy's scoring in the final 20 minutes.  This allowed the Dolphins to work their way back into the game behind the shooting of Bryce Waterman.  Waterman, who went on to score a game-high 24 points, tied the score on a three-pointer with 13:12 remaining.  Wilson then gave CSI the lead from the free-throw line, a lead the Dolphins would hold until the closing minutes.  CSI would go ahead by as many as 8 points with just over 6 minutes to play, but Molloy would rally from behind to take the lead with under 3 minutes left in the game.  However, that was the final Lions lead of the game as a JJ Chestnut and-one put the Dolphins in front for good.  Jordan McAllister extended the CSI lead to 3 with 24 seconds to play before two Waterman free throws and one final stop as time expired sealed the win.

The 24 points for Waterman were a season-high and he was joined by Wilson, Chestnut and McAllister in double-figures.  Robby Matos led the Lions with 23 points and was one of five Lions with at least 10 points in the game.  Jalen Rosemond finished with a double-double, but it was 15 Molloy turnovers that ultimately proved costly.  The Dolphins coupled their second half defensive resurgence with only 7 turnovers in the victory.

Men's Basketball returns to The Tank for their conference home opener on Saturday as they will take on CUNY rival Queens College at 7:30 PM.
