Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS WIN STREAK HITS THREE WITH THRILLING OVERTIME WIN OVER MOLLOY, 73-71

Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team opened conference play with a thrilling overtime win over Molloy University earlier tonight as the Dolphins defeated the Lions for their third straight win, 73-71.  The Dolphins improve to 4-2 with the victory and begin conference play 1-0 against the ECC.  The Lions fall to 2-4 on the year and start 0-1 in conference play.

Much like their strong start on Sunday, the Dolphins opened the game on a 7-1 run including 5 points from Dana Phelan.  However, Phelan was relegated to the bench with foul trouble and the Dolphins turned to the scoring of Ashley Lambert to grow their lead.  Lambert scored five straight to increase the CSI lead to nine, 12-3, and the Dolphins would finish the quarter leading by six.  After a miserable shooting start, the Lions began to find their stroke in the second quarter, but the Dolphins began to assert their dominance in the paint.  Jenalyse Alarcon scored 8 in the second, and helped the Dolphins build their largest lead of the game, 12 points.  CSI would go into the half leading 34-25, but the Lions would come out of halftime red-hot.

Molloy surged ahead late in the third behind a 12-0 run and went on to shoot 12-18 in the period.  The Dolphins would get as close as one in the closing minutes of the quarter, but the Lions quickly extended their advantage to six points heading into the fourth.  The Dolphins once again pulled to within one to start the final quarter, but Molloy was able to maintain the lead for the first four minutes of the period.  The Dolphins finally took the lead back on a Noemia Massingue layup with just under six minutes to go, and the teams would go on to trade baskets from there.

Neither team would lead by more than one possession for the remainder of regulation, and both sides connected on big shots down the stretch.  First, Kyra Rose tied the score at 63 with under two minutes to play, but moments later, Samantha Muller gave Molloy the lead right back.  Following a CSI timeout, Kaia Johnson knocked down a game-tying jumper, but the Lions answered again with a Colleen McCullagh layup.  A missed free throw left the Dolphins trailing by two with one minute remaining, but CSI failed to score.  However, Kyra Rose intercepted a Lions pass and drove straight to the rim for another game-tying basket.

A Janel Moore miss would send the game to overtime where the teams combined for just six points.  Four of those belonged to Lambert who put CSI ahead for good with a huge three-pointer.  Lambert then extended the lead to two from the line in the closing seconds, and one final stop at the defensive end secured the CSI victory.

Lambert finished with a season-high 18 points as she followed up her 16-point effort on Sunday with another strong performance.  Rose and Alarcon each scored in double-figures with 15 and 11 points respectively.  Alarcon also recorded her second double-double of the season and dished out 6 more assists.  Muller was one of three Lions to score in double-figures and Trinity Hudson finished with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double.

The Dolphins return to The Tank on Saturday when they will host the Queens College Knights in their first conference home game of the season.  Tipoff against their CUNY rival will be at 1 PM.
