Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL JUST SHORT OF MASSIVE COMEBACK IN LOSS TO CALDWELL, 65-59

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team came up just short of completing a massive comeback earlier today as they nearly erased an 18-point fourth quarter deficit in their loss to the Caldwell University Cougars, 65-59.  The Dolphins are now 5-6 on the season and the Cougars move to 2-4 on the year.  The Cougars win also evens the all-time series at two games per side and Caldwell has won each of the last two meetings.

The Cougars scored the game's first point from the free throw line, but neither team would score again until over three minutes passed in the opening quarter.  For the Dolphins, Kyra Rose provided an offensive spark off the bench and the CSI second unit briefly gave their team the lead at the midway point of the quarter.  However, the Dolphins went ice cold from the field from there and the Cougars slowly built their lead up to 10 points entering the second.  That lead remained a double-digit advantage for most of the second quarter as well, and Caldwell took a 12-point lead into halftime.

The Caldwell lead grew to 22 points during the third quarter, but this was also when the CSI offense began to find its rhythm.  Rose continued to lead CSI in scoring, but Jenalyse Alarcon and Oyinkansola Oke joined her in igniting a third quarter scoring run.  This trimmed the lead down to 14 entering the final quarter, but the Cougars grew the lead back to 18 early in the fourth.  After going in front by 18, the Cougars did not register a made field goal again until the game's closing seconds, and a 14-0 Dolphins run brought CSI to within two points with 14 second left.  However, the Cougars closed out the win from the free-throw line and time ran out on the CSI comeback bid.

Kyra Rose led the Dolphins with 20 points each and Alarcon finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds following a very strong second half.  Four Cougars scored in double figures, but the Dolphins managed to outshoot Caldwell by nearly 5%.  Despite the advantage in field goal percentage, the Dolphins surrendered 6 three-pointers and made just 2.  They also lost the turnover battle after a sloppy start to the game in the opening quarter.

The Dolphins have one game on the schedule before the new year as they will face Pace University on the road on December 30th.
