Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL TO NEW HAVEN IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY, 86-78

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team returned home for their final outing of 2023 at The Tank and dropped a non-conference matchup to the University of New Haven, 86-78.  The Dolphins fall to 8-5 with the loss and New Haven improves to 4-7 with their third straight victory.  The Chargers also stay perfect against the Dolphins in the all-time series.

The Dolphins came out strong and led by as many as 7 points early in the first half.  Leading 16-9, the Dolphins surrendered a 9-0 run that evened up the score just shy of the midway point in the half.  From there, the Dolphins rebuilt their lead all the way to double-figures behind a 9-0 run of their own.  Messiah Mallory, who scored 20 in the game, and Aaron Goldstein combined to connect on three straight three-pointers to provide the Dolphins with an offensive spark.  However, CSI's performance late in the half was highlighted by suffocating defense that held the Chargers without a made field goal for nearly 7 minutes.  That New Haven scoring drought came to an end with 1:20 remaining in the half, and a buzzer beating halfcourt heave sent the game into the break with the Dolphins leading by just 5.

The 5-point CSI lead entering the half grew to as large as 8 following the intermission, but the Chargers quickly took their first lead behind an 11-2 run.  The Dolphins responded by tying the score at 51, but once again New Haven answered with a scoring run, this time 7-0.  Now trailing 58-51, the Dolphins were forced to play from behind the rest of the way.  The Chargers would take the lead by 10 for the first time with under 3 minutes to play, but JJ Chestnut continued to keep the Dolphins in the game with his work around the rim.  Behind his strong finishes, multiple second chance scores, and free throws, the Dolphins worked their way back to within four and had possession with just under one minute to play.  The late CSI comeback bid would end here as the New Haven defense was finally able to stop Chestnut and secure the win, 86-78.

Chestnut led the Dolphins with 21 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.  Mallory finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds as he collected his fourth double-double of the season.  Goldstein and Bryce Waterman joined them in double-figures, but the Dolphins shot only 8-30 from beyond the arc and turned the ball over 19 times.  Four players scored in double-figures for the Chargers led by Ethan Simmon with 20.  Tyler Saint-Furcy also registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Dolphins will return to action with their first game of 2024 next Saturday at The Tank when they take on Franklin-Pierce University at 2 PM.
