Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CAN'T ERASE EARLY DEFICIT IN LOSS TO MERCY, 60-51

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw their four-game win streak come to an end earlier tonight as they lost to the Mercy University Mavericks, 60-51.  The Dolphins fall to 5-3 on the season and are now 2-1 against the ECC after suffering their first defeat in conference play.  The Mavericks improve to 7-2 overall and are now 1-1 against the conference.

The Dolphins got off to a slow start in the opening quarter and were fighting out of that early hole throughout the remainder of the game.  Mercy opened the game on a 7-2 run, but the Dolphins quickly responded with four straight points to make it 7-6.  After that, Mercy went on a 10-0 run, and the Dolphins did not score again until the closing seconds of the first.  CSI entered the second trailing 19-9, and six of the first eight points in that quarter were scored by the Mavericks.  Now behind by 14, Ashley Lambert gave the Dolphins the offensive spark they needed.  Consecutive Lambert threes brought CSI back to within ten, but the Dolphins ended the half in a 13-point hole.

The third quarter saw the Dolphins slowly climb there way back to withing striking distance by getting to the line.  CSI would score 10 points at the line in the period and both Dana Phelan and Madison Haggett would each connect on a big three-pointer.  This sent CSI to the fourth trailing by seven, setting the stage for a late comeback bid.  Remarkably, the Dolphins scored their first ten points of the fourth from the line and were able to cut the deficit to four with 3:36 to go.  However, the lack of made shots ultimately caught up to the Dolphins, and CSI did not register another point until the final five seconds of a 60-51 defeat.

Alarcon led the way with 13 points and no other Dolphin finished with more than 7.  The team struggled from the field shooting just above 23%, but they were able to offset much of that by shooting 21-26 from the line.  Defensively the Dolphins held the Mavericks to just 2-16 from the outside, but Mercy shot above 41% from the field in the win.  The Mavericks also had four players in double-figures and outscored the Dolphins 38-12 in the paint.

The Dolphins return home on Saturday when they will face St. Thomas Aquinas College at The Tank.  The CSI women will open that doubleheader at 1:00 PM.
