Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL TO SPARTANS IN EARLY-SEASON THRILLER AT THE TANK, 79-77

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team lost a thriller at The Tank earlier today as their second half lead got away in the closing minutes against Saint Thomas Aquinas College in a 79-77 loss.  The Dolphins fall to 6-4 with the loss and drop to 3-1 in conference play.  The Spartans are now 10-1 on the year and are 2-0 against the ECC.

The game started with a fast-paced back and forth between the two teams that ended with the score tied at 14 eight minutes into the game.  From there, STAC began to knock down a plethora of outside shots to go ahead by as many as many as 12 points, a lead that CSI cut down to single digits by halftime.  Following the intermission, the Dolphins fell behind by 11, but the double-digit Spartans lead was short-lived.  Trailing 47-37, CSI connected on five consecutive three-pointers, two by Chris Clancy and three by Bryce Waterman.  This tied the game at 49 and set the stage for an exciting finish.

After tying the score, the Dolphins would go ahead by as many as seven and led by five with under five minutes to play.  However, eight straight points by Kyle Pulliam put STAC ahead by three.  Waterman would answer with another three, his seventh of the game, to tie the score at 67.  After STAC briefly took the lead, Waterman's eighth three put the Dolphins up by one, but a 7-0 Spartans run put them in front by six with 90 seconds remaining.  Behind 76-70, Aaron Goldstein brought CSI to within four with a three before a STAC free-throw made it 77-73.

Now in the closing seconds, Goldstein connected on a tough fadeaway three from the top of the arc to make it a one-point game.  Two Spartan free-throws put STAC ahead by three and an intentional foul sent Goldstein to the line with six seconds remaining.  After making the front half of a one-and-one, Goldstein intentionally airballed the second to earn the Dolphins possession off of the resulting jump ball.  This gave CSI possession trailing by one with six seconds left, but Goldstein's attempt from the corner hit the side of the backboard.  The Dolphins would get one last chance on a halfcourt heave, but the attempt came too last as CSI fell, 79-77.

Waterman finished with 26, Goldstein had 16, and Messiah Mallory had 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Dolphins.  Pulliam had 20 for the Spartans and James Patterson had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Men's Basketball returns home next Saturday for the second game of a non-conference doubleheader when they will face Saint Michael's College at 3 PM.
