Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS SETTLE FOR SPLIT OF SEASON SERIES WITH MOLLOY FOLLOWING 77-57 LOSS

Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team saw their playoff push slowed down a bit this afternoon as they suffered a defeat at the hands of the Molloy University Lions, 77-57.  With the loss, the Dolphins drop to 8-16 on the year and 6-8 in conference play.  The Lions improve to 11-15 overall and are now 10-4 against the East Coast Conference.

The Dolphins got off to another quick start and pulled ahead by five in the opening minutes of the first half.  However, the Lions responded with an 10-3 run to go in front by two.  A JJ Chestnut three put the Dolphins back ahead momentarily, but the Lions answered with a 6-0 spurt to take a five-point lead.  The Dolphins battled back to within one, but once again the Lions put together a scoring run, this time 9-0, to go ahead by double-digits.  Despite shooting 8-34 from the field and 4-22 from beyond the arc in the half, the Dolphins would go into the locker room trailing by only seven.

A Bryce Waterman three got CSI as close as five early in the second half, but they quickly fell back behind by double-digits just moments later.  The Dolphins would fall behind by as many as thirteen in the early minutes of the second half, and from here they began yet another late-game comeback bid.  Three consecutive threes, two by Chris Velasquez and one by Messiah Mallory, cut the Molloy lead down to five, but this was as close as the Dolphins would get.  The Lions worked the lead back up to thirteen multiple times and were finally able to extend the lead past that in the closing minutes of a 20-point win.

Mallory registered another double-double finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Velasquez and Waterman also finished in double-figures with 15 and 12 points respectively.  Waterman was also just one rebound shy of a double-double finishing with 9 boards.  Kenny Lazo led Molloy with 19 points and Darren Fergus had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double.  Billy Muller also had a double-double in the game with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Kendell Ogilvie and Billy Reyes rounded out a group of five Lions who scored in double-figures with 11 and 14 points respectively.  Though the Dolphins improved their shooting in the second half, the improvement was not nearly enough to erase their second-half deficit.  CSI finished just 29% from the field and 22% from beyond the arc compared to 46% from the field and 33% from downtown for the Lions.

The East Coast Conference picture remains the same following the Dolphins loss, and CSI remains the six seed despite today's defeat.  Queens also lost their game against UDC so the Dolphins maintain a 1.5 game lead over the Knights with two conference games remaining for CSI.  If the Dolphins win both, they secure a playoff spot.  If the Dolphins lose one of those games, the possibility remains that the six seed could come down to a tiebreaker as Queens has three conference games remaining.
