Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FAIL TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT AS COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN CLOSING SECONDS

Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team failed to lock up a spot in the East Coast Conference playoffs today as they were defeated by the Molloy University Lions, 44-39.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 9-15 on the season and 5-9 against the East Coast Conference.  The Lions keep their playoff hopes alive with the win improving to 5-18 overall and 4-10 in the ECC.

The Dolphins offense struggled mightily for much of the first half as they scored just six points in the first quarter and four points in the second quarter.  Neither team shot the ball well in the first twenty minutes with the Dolphins finishing the first half 5-30 from the floor and the Lions finishing 8-24.  Despite the poor shooting, Molloy took a 15-point lead into the intermission behind a 5-0 run to close the first half.

After being unable to find any consistency at the offensive end for nearly 25 minutes, the Dolphins turned up their defensive intensity and began to find their shooting stroke at the midway point of the third quarter.  Trailing by seventeen, the Dolphins went on a quick 7-0 run to pull back to within ten.  The Lions snapped the run with a free-throw, but Amaya Jenkins followed with a buzzer-beating half-court heave to bring the Dolphins to within eight at the end of the third.  Molloy struck first in the final quarter to go back in front by ten, but back-to-back threes by Gia Esposito and Ashley Lambert immediately cut the lead down to four.  An Esposito and-one made it a three-point game one minute later, and a Jenalyse Alarcon layup brought the Dolphins within one with 4:38 remaining.

Faced with squandering a lead that was once as large as seventeen, Trinity Hudson hit a huge three to put Molloy back ahead by four.  Neither team would score again for nearly three minutes after that, and the next basket came with just over one minute left in the game.  An Alarcon free-throw brought the Dolphins back to within three, but after picking up a much-needed stop, the Dolphins surrendered an offensive rebound and were forced to foul.  A one-for-two trip to the line put Molloy ahead by four, but another Lambert three made it a one-point game with 19 seconds on the clock.  Two more free-throws put Molloy ahead by three, and the Dolphins could not connect on a potential game-tying three on their next offensive possession.  This allowed the Lions to close out the win from the line and keep their playoff hopes alive in the process.

Lambert finished with 15 to lead the Dolphins and was the only player who scored in double-figures for CSI.  Alarcon finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds and Noemia Massignue grabbed another 13 boards.  Samantha Muller scored 15 for Molloy and she finished as the only player to score in double-figures for the Lions.  Hudson was one point short of a double-double and finished with 12 rebounds.  Both teams shot below 30% from the three-point range in the game and finished under 23% from the field.  Following a poor first half, the CSI comeback was jump started by their defense and outside shooting.  After going without a three for the first twenty minutes of the game and falling behind by 15 points, the Dolphins hit six second-half threes and held the Lions to 3-27 shooting in the second half.

The Lions win makes the East Coast Conference playoff picture a bit more crowded.  With the victory, the Lions still trail CSI by one game in the standings and the Dolphins still control the fate of their playoff push.  However, the Dolphins will hope to avoid a potential tiebreaker and lock up a playoff spot with wins in their last two games.
