Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SECOND HALF RALLY FALLS JUST SHORT AT THE BUZZER AS DOLPHINS FALL TO CHARGERS, 56-54

West Haven, CT - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw a second half surge fall two points short earlier tonight as they fell to the University of New Haven 56-54.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 9-16 on the season with three games remaining.  The Chargers get back into the win column with the victory and improve to 16-8.

The Dolphins offense opened the game scoring just six points in the first six minutes of the game, but the CSI defense held the Chargers to single-digit scoring during that stretch as well.  The Dolphins would pull to within one late in the opening period, but a 9-0 Chargers run put New Haven ahead by double-figures for the first time.  CSI was able to regain their footing from there and would enter the second quarter trailing by seven.  Despite bouncing back late in the first, the Dolphins could not carry that momentum into the second and surrendered an 11-0 run to open the quarter.  With New Haven in front by 18, their largest lead of the game, the Dolphins shut the Chargers out for the final 4:45 of the first half and cut the lead down to eleven heading into the intermission.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter, and the Dolphins did not get back to within ten until the final seconds of the period.  The Dolphins quickly fell behind by ten again to open the fourth, but eight straight points by Ashley Lambert trimmed the lead all the way down to two.  The Chargers would go ahead by seven with 5:24 to play, but once again the Dolphins responded and were able to get back to within a single point with two minutes to play.  Moments later, Camryn DeBose put the Chargers back in front by four with a three.  Lambert then responded with another shot from the beyond the arc to make it a one-point game and went on to tie the game at 54 during the next CSI possession.  This left 18 seconds on the clock for the Chargers, and DeBose came through yet again as she delivered a go-ahead basket at the rim with just under four seconds remaining.  Without any timeouts, the Dolphins raced up the floor and Amaya Jenkins could not connect on a running floater in the lane that would have tied the score at the buzzer.

Alarcon and Lambert led the Dolphins in scoring with 16 and 14 points respectively.  Alarcon added 7 rebounds as well and both shot efficiently from the field.  Lambert finished the game 5-10 including 4-8 from three-point range and Alarcon finished 7-14 from the floor.  Kaia Johnson also added 9 points, 4 steals, and 4 assists in 27 minutes.  For the Chargers, DeBose had 26 to lead her team, and no other player scored in double-figures for New Haven.  Aurora Deshaies finished two points short of a double-double with 8 points and 13 boards helping the Chargers outrebound the Dolphins 41-26.  The Dolphins were the far more efficient team from beyond the arc sooting 43% to New Haven's 25%.  However, the Chargers held a distinct advantage on the glass and outshot the Dolphins from the field 45% to 35%.

The Dolphins will be on the road this Saturday against the University of the District of Columbia in need of a win to maintain their one-game lead in the East Coast Conference playoff chase.  The 5-9 Dolphins currently sit one game ahead of the 4-10 Lions with the tiebreaker still up for grabs entering each team's final two conference games.
