Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS STRUGGLE DEFENSIVELY IN LOSS TO FIREBIRDS, 86-58

Washington D.C. - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team could not slow down the Firebirds offense as they lost to the University of the District of Columbia 86-58.  The Dolphins fall to 9-17 on the year with the defeat and are now 5-10 against the East Coast Conference with one conference game left.  The Firebirds improve to 14-12 on the season and are now 9-6 in conference play.

The Firebirds got off to a red-hot shooting start and never slowed down as they connected on three three-pointers in under five minutes to start the opening quarter.  This gave UDC a ten-point lead, 14-4.  Less than three minutes later, the Firebirds would go ahead by double-digits for the first time, but the Dolphins would end the quarter on a 6-0 run.  The Dolphins fell behind by double-figures again early in the second, and would close the second quarter much like the first, with another scoring run.  Trailing by as many as 15 with 4:17 to go in the half, the Dolphins would surge back to within seven.  However, UDC closed the half scoring the final four points and led by eleven at the break.

The Dolphins did not score for over five minutes to start the third period, and this allowed the Firebirds to go ahead by over twenty points shortly after halftime.  The offensive drought also kept the Dolphins from getting within striking distance for the remainder of the game, and the CSI deficit would not fall below seventeen points again.  Despite scoring just shy of their season's average, the Dolphins ultimately fell by twenty-eight points in their third straight loss.

Gia Esposito put together another solid scoring effort against the Firebirds finishing with 21 points and Ashley Lambert added 16 more.  No other Dolphin scored in double-figures or attempted more than nine shots in the game, and Esposito and Lambert combined to account for all six made threes by the Dolphins.  UDC had four players score in double-digits led by Latavia Jackson's 23 points, and both Destiny Ryles and Shanell Haskins finished with 17.  Haskins hit five of the eleven UDC triples in a game which saw the Firebirds finish 11-24 from beyond the arc.  This 46% mark from downtown combined with 46% overall shooting was too much for CSI to overcome following a third quarter where the Dolphins struggled for offense.

The Dolphins will host Chestnut Hill on Tuesday before facing Roberts Wesleyan in their final home game of season on Saturday, February 25th.  The CSI women find themselves in a slightly tougher position than the CSI men in terms of playoff positioning.  The men still control their own fate and can clinch a playoff spot with a win.  The women could clinch with a win on Saturday if Molloy loses their next conference game.  If Molloy wins, there remains the potential for tie-breaking procedures to kick in should both teams win their conference finale next weekend.
