Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

THRILLING COMEBACK FORCES OVERTIME, BUT DOLPHINS FALL TO GRIFFINS, 86-76

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team erased a seventeen-point deficit to force overtime earlier tonight but could not close out the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in an 86-76 loss.  The Dolphins fall to 9-18 on the year with the defeat and the Griffins improve to 18-9.  With the victory, the Griffins stay perfect against the Dolphins in two meetings between this season and last season.

Neither team got off to a strong start offensively as the two sides combined for just eight points through the first four minutes of the game.  The Dolphins would fall behind by four, 14-10, and from there the Griffins would go on an 11-0 run to take a 15-point lead.  The Dolphins closed the quarter with an Amaya Jenkins layup, but the Griffins picked up where they left off in the second.  Chestnut Hill would go ahead by as many as sixteen, a lead that was cut down to twelve with four minutes to go in the half.  After that, neither team would score until the final 30 seconds of the half, and the Dolphins went into halftime behind by twelve.

The first half of the third quarter saw the Dolphins slowly fall further behind and it appeared that the game was beginning to slip away from CSI.  They trailed at one point by a game-high seventeen, but the Dolphins stepped up the defensive intensity and began to find their shooting stroke offensively.  After Jenalyse Alarcon finished a tough shot in traffic to make it a twelve-point game with 3:43 remaining in the third, she remained down on the floor injured as play continued at the other end.  CSI would come away with a stop before the officials stopped the game, and Alarcon was then helped off the floor.  On the ensuing possession, Gia Espositio, who started the game shooting 0-6, knocked a three to cut the lead to single-digits.  This kick-started a 15-2 CSI run that culminated with another triple by Jenkins to beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter.

Without Alarcon, the Dolphins would go in front by as many as three in the final quarter, and Esposito would go on to hit six consecutive shots after her slow start.  Trailing by two with just over four minutes remaining, Ashley Lambert connected on her first three to put the Dolphins back ahead by one.  After a Griffins basket, Alarcon, who ultimately returned to the game, would assist a Noemia Massingue layup to put CSI in front by one again.  The Griffins responded with a three to go ahead by two, but Esposito answered right back with another three to put CSI ahead by one for a third time.  With 31 seconds to go, Alarcon would tie the game with a layup, and following a defensive stop, the Dolphins would take advantage of a Griffins full-court press to score a go-ahead layup with 6.6 seconds left.  Abbey Spratt went on to tie the game with under two seconds to go, and the Griffins would shut the Dolphins offense down in overtime to take the win by ten.

Esposito led the Dolphins in scoring against the Griffins for the second straight year finishing tonight's game with 17 points on 6-13 from the field.  Five of her six made shots came from beyond the arc and all of her points came after halftime.  Despite her injury late in the third, Alarcon still played 37 minutes in the game and registered 15 points and 8 rebounds.  Amaya Jenkins also added a career-high 14 points to go along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.  The Griffins played thirteen players in the game and eleven of them scored.  Emily Chmiel led Chestnut Hill in scoring and had an 18-point, 14-rebound double-double.  Morgan Oloski added another 15 points and Morgan Sterner also scored in double-figures with 10.  The Dolphins simply went ice-cold shooting in overtime hitting just two of eleven shots in the extra period.  The Griffins had just three made field goals and hit all ten of their free-throws in the overtime period.

The Dolphins will host Roberts Wesleyan in their final home game of season on Saturday.  If Molloy loses their next conference game to Mercy tomorrow night, the Dolphins can lock up a playoff spot with a win over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.  A Molloy win would tie CSI in the standings heading into the final day of the season while a loss would keep CSI one game ahead of Molloy in the conference standings.
