GAMEDAY: WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WRAPS UP WEEKEND ROAD TRIP AGAINST D'YOUVILLE

2/5/2023 11:00:00 AM

Buffalo, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team wraps up their weekend road trip this afternoon when they take on the D'Youville University Saints at 1 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's game with a 7-14 record this season and are 3-8 in conference play.  The Saints come in 7-11 on the year and are 6-5 against the East Coast Conference.  The Saints have won two out of the three meetings between the two teams with the lone Dolphins win coming on the road at D'Youville last season.

The Dolphins last played on Friday night against Daemen University and could not overcome the red-hot shooting of the Wildcats in a 79-54 loss.  The Dolphins offense struggled for much of the first half which allowed Daemen to build a sizable lead that they would never relinquish.  The Saints were last in action on Friday night as well when they hosted the University of the District of Columbia.  The Firebirds doubled up the Saints in a 80-40 defeat for D'Youville, just the team's second loss in their last five games.

Gia Esposito, Kaia Johnson, and Ashley Lambert scored in double-figures for the Dolphins on Friday night, but the team did not begin to find their footing offensively until the second half.  Defensively, they allowed the Wildcats to shoot over 53% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc.  Earlier this season, only Jenalyse Alarcon, CSI's leading scorer and rebounder, scored in double-digits against the Saints.  The Dolphins shot just 35% in that game and turned the ball over 23 times.  However, CSI made a late push in the second half nearly coming from behind to steal a victory on their home floor.   Stacey Fuglsang and Stella Mollica led D'Youville in scoring in that game, but the Saints also struggled with turnovers giving the ball away 20 times.  D'Youville shot only 47% from the free throw line as well, but their advantage in overall shooting was too much for the Dolphins too overcome.

The Dolphins position in the East Coast Conference standings remains the same despite Friday's loss.  Molloy picked up a pair of wins to move to 3-9, but Roberts Wesleyan suffered another loss to fall to 2-9.  The Dolphins maintain a half-game lead over the Lions and a one game lead over the Redhawks with three weeks remaining in the season, but most importantly, they currently own the tiebreaker over both of those teams.
