WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TIGHTENS GRIP ON PLAYOFF SPOT WITH WIN OVER QUEENS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team moved one step closer to clinching a playoff spot earlier tonight as they defeated the Knights of Queens College by a final score 57-46.  With the win, the Dolphins are now 9-14 on the season and 5-8 against the East Coast Conference.  They leapfrog the Knights, now 6-16 overall and 4-8 in the ECC, in the standings with the win as well.  CSI could now potentially clinch a playoff spot as early as Saturday with a win over Molloy.

The Dolphins fell behind 6-0 in the opening minutes, but recovered nicely behind five consecutive points from Elizabeth Lofaro.  The Knights then scored five straight to go back ahead by six before Gia Esposito answered with seven straight points for the Dolphins.  Queens would score the final basket of the quarter to go ahead by one, but Esposito would open the second quarter with her second three-pointer of the game to put the Dolphins back ahead by two.  Neither team would lead by more than three until the closing minutes of the half when the Dolphins pulled ahead by five.  Once again the Knights would score the final basket in the second period and sent the game to halftime with CSI leading 24-21.

The Dolphins came out of the halftime locker room strong and did not allow a Knights field goal until over 2:30 had passed in the third quarter.  By that time, the Dolphins were already leading by eight, a lead that grew as large as eleven with just 2:41 to play in the third.  However, the Knights closed the period on an 8-0 run to make it a one-possession game entering the fourth.  The Dolphins opened the final quarter with some more stellar defense and did not allow a Knights basket for nearly four full minutes.  Unfortunately for CSI, they didn't score much during that stretch and a Brianna Davis three ended the Queens drought cutting the lead down to four.  From that point forward it was all Dolphins, and the CSI lead never fell below six again in an eleven-point win.

Esposito led the Dolphins in scoring with a season-high 17 points and Lofaro added 13 more.  Ashley Lambert finished in double-figures as well with 10 points, and Jenalyse Alarcon finished one point shy of a double-double with 9 points and 15 rebounds.  The Knights only played six players in the game, and that group was led in scoring by Brianna Davis who fouled out late with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Raven Pitt also finished in double-figures with 10 points and 8 rebounds and Chelsea Reeves scored 7 to go along with 11 boards.  Already disadvantaged by a short rotation, Queens simply couldn't overcome their poor shooting as they finished 29% from the field and 25%, 1-4, from beyond the arc.  The Dolphins weren't any better from downtown, but their greater efficiency overall proved to be the difference in the game.

Because the Dolphins are now two games ahead of Molloy heading into Saturday's game against the Lions, they will have an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday.  This is because a win in Saturday's game would give CSI a three-game lead over the Lions with only two conference games remaining after this weekend's matchup.
