SWEEP OF AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTED BY GAROFALO'S 300TH WIN AND INCREDIBLE 8-RUN COMEBACK

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team earned a sweep of today's doubleheader against American International College with a pair of one-run victories.  In game one, the Dolphins held on for a 4-3 win, and in game two the Dolphins came from eight runs down to defeat the Yellow Jackets, 9-8.  With the first victory, Head Coach Tracey Garofalo earned career win number 300, and with a second win the Dolphins finished the day 6-14.  The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-12 on the season with the pair of losses.

GAME 1
The Yellow Jackets took the lead early in game one after a Dolphins error set up an RBI single by Yellow Jackets starting pitcher Alexis Jimenez.  A double play brought the first inning to a close with the Yellow Jackets leading 1-0, and from there, neither team would score again until the fourth.  Behind a six-hit fourth inning, the Dolphins put up a four-spot against Jimenez and took a three-run lead.  Madison Edwards, Natalya Knoth, Victoria Whalen, and Mariah Carcano all delivered run-scoring hits in the inning, but the Dolphins would not score again the rest of the way.  Following two errors and a walk in the fifth, Alexandra Frenza came on in relief of CSI starter Alexis Miramontes.  Frenza quickly recorded three outs, allowing just one of the inherited runners to score.  Frenza went on to strand two on base in the sixth before allowing a run in the seventh to make it 4-3.  With the tying run on first, Frenza struck out the final batter of the game to secure the 4-3 win.

GAME 2
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the first inning for the second consecutive game scoring twice in the opening frame.  They then scored again in the second to make it 3-0 and scored four more times in the third to make it 7-0.  The Dolphins had their first big opportunity in the third, but CSI stranded the bases loaded and failed to score.  With another run in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets moved six outs away from a mercy rule victory.  In the next half-inning CSI failed to score again and were down to their final three outs.

Still behind 8-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Dolphins began the inning with a walk and six consecutive hits.  This brought CSI back to within four before the first out was recorded.  With one away, a Knoth double plated two more runs and another double by Rianne Mayer made it an 8-7 game.  The game was tied on a groundout one batter later, and the Dolphins took the lead on a run-scoring wild pitch soon after.  The inning finally came to a close with CSI leading 9-8, and neither team would score again after that.  The Yellow Jackets stranded one on base in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh as the Dolphins completed the two-game sweep.

The CSI offense, which came in struggling to score, collected 10 hits in each game of today's doubleheader.  Four Dolphins had two hits in game one as Whalen, Carcano, Elizabeth Moore, and Aileen Balderas all had two hits in the 4-3 win.  In game two, Alyssa Acosta and Mayer each had two hits and both Anissa Acosta and Knoth drove in a pair of runs.  Miramontes pitched very well in her game one start and picked up her fourth win of the season to improve to 4-6.  Alexandra Frenza also came up big in relief in both games as she allowed just one run and five hits in 6.2 innings out of the Dolphins bullpen.  For Head Coach Tracey Garofalo, the victory in the first game is the 300th of her collegiate coaching career.

Weather permitting, the Dolphins will be back in action at the CSI Softball Complex this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders.  On Saturday, the Dolphins are scheduled to face D'Youville University at 11 AM.  On Sunday, the Dolphins are scheduled for a non-conference doubleheader against Bloomfield College.
