DOLPHINS LOSE TWICE TO MERCY IN 2023 SEASON FINALE

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team wrapped up the 2023 season at the CSI Softball Complex earlier today dropping two games to the Mercy College Mavericks in conference play.  With the two defeats, the Dolphins end the season 11-37 overall and 3-17 against the East Coast Conference.  The Mavericks end their season 15-29 and 10-10 against conference opponents.

GAME 1
The first two Mavericks reached on walks to start the game and remained at first and second base with two outs in the first inning.  From there, three straight Mercy hits made it 3-0 forcing the Dolphins to go to the bullpen early.  Alexandra Frenza, who came on in relief, would go on to escape the early jam and went on to pitch the rest of the game for the Dolphins.  Behind 3-0 in the home half of the second, senior Rianne Mayer delivered an RBI single to get the Dolphins on the board for the first time.  The Dolphins then induced a throw on a stolen base attempt which allowed another run to score from third.  However, this was the last time the Dolphins would score, and the Mavericks went on to score four unanswered runs.  A CSI error allowed an unearned run to score in the fourth, and four Mercy hits led to a three-run Mavericks rally in the seventh.  The 7-2 Mercy lead would hold the rest of the way and the Mavericks took the win in game one by that final score.

GAME 2
The Mavericks scored first in game two on a Cayla Crawford solo home run, but the Dolphins immediately got even in the next half-inning.  Mariah Carcano led off with a triple for the Dolphins in the home first, and a ground ball brought her home to even the score.  The Mavericks then scored another unearned run in the second as a result of two Dolphin errors to make the score 2-1, and would go on to break the game open with a four spot in the fourth to go ahead 6-1.  The Dolphins rallied for two in the next half-inning, but CSI stranded the bases loaded still trailing 6-3.  The Dolphins would bring Anissa Acosta to the plate as the tying run in the seventh, but this is as close as they would get as CSI would get.  Acosta would ground out to end the game and the Mavericks earned the win by a final score of 6-3.

Amelia Funston had two hits and game one and Acosta added two more hits in game two.  The Mavericks outhit the Dolphins by just four across the two games, but CSI committed five errors and walked 14 batters.  In the circle, Alexandra Frenza provided the Dolphins with 8.1 innings of relief in the two games and was a huge reason why the Dolphins remained within striking distance for much of the day.  However, the CSI offense made it 11 of 12 games scoring three runs or fewer to end the season, and that was not enough to beat the Mavericks in either game.

Having been eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, Softball's season comes to an end with today's doubleheader.  Next year, the Dolphins will be one of six teams eligible to earn a playoff spot in the East Coast Conference.  Beginning in the 2024 season, D'Youville will be eligible to qualify for the postseason, making the road to the playoffs a bit tougher for the Dolphins.  Having graduated just one player from this year's roster, CSI's 2024 squad will feature many of the same players returning next year in what the team hopes will be a bounce back season.
