Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CONTINUE STRONG START AGAINST CONFERENCE WITH FIRST-EVER WIN OVER DAEMEN, 71-62

Amherst, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team continued their strong start against the ECC earlier tonight as they defeated the Wildcats of Daemen University, 71-62.  The Dolphins are now 10-6 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.  The Wildcats drop to 12-5 on the season and even up their conference record at 2-2.  The win is the first for the Dolphins against Daemen in program history as they were 0-4 against the Wildcats entering tonight's game.

Defense ruled much of the first half and the game's first points were not scored until over three minutes after tip off.  From there, the two teams traded baskets for several minutes until the score was tied at 12.  With the score even, Shemar Latty scored four straight to give the Dolphins a 16-12 lead. However, the Dolphins would not score for the next three minutes and Damen tied the score at 16.  The Dolphins immediately responded with an 8-0 run powered by back-to-back threes from Bryce Waterman.  This time, it was Daemen that delivered an answer in the form of a 7-0 run to make it 24-23. Following a back-and-forth half, the two teams would go into halftime tied at 26.

Waterman continued his hot three-point shooting to open the second half and quickly gave the Dolphins a three-point lead with another make from beyond the arc.  However, the Wildcats put together another scoring run early in the half and took their largest lead of the game, seven points.  It was at this point that Latty took over for the Dolphins offensively scoring eight straight points to give CSI the lead, 48-47.  The Dolphins would fall behind by one briefly, but they would never trail again after that.  Latty continued to deliver all the offense that the Dolphins would need and the CSI defense held the Wildcats to just 11 points over the final eight minutes of a 71-62 victory.

Latty scored a career-high 24 points in the win and Waterman finished with 19.  As part of the Dolphins defensive effort, Messiah Mallory blocked a CSI single-game record 8 shots.  The 8 blocks also set a new career program record for the junior who now has 154 blocks in just his third season with the team.  In the absence of Dylan Fasoyiro, three Wildcats scored in double-figures led by Joey Atkins with 20.  Both teams shot the ball well above 40% from the field and at least 40% from three, but the Dolphins connected on 10 threes to Daemen's 4.  This, coupled with CSI's late-game defense, made the difference as the Dolphins earned their fourth conference win.

Sunday's scheduled game against D'Youville University has been postponed and the Dolphins will return home ahead of a looming winter storm.  The next game on the schedule for Men's Basketball will be played at The Tank on Saturday when they host Alumni Day against UDC next Saturday.  The Matty and Delores White Men's Basketball Alumni Game tips off at 11 AM followed by the game against UDC at 1:00 PM.
