Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CAN'T OVERTAKE UDC IN CLOSING MINUTES OF 73-69 LOSS

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team could not get past the University of the District of Columbia in the closing minutes of a thriller earlier today as they fell, 73-69.  The Dolphins are now 5-11 on the season and drop to 2-4 in conference play.  The Firebirds improve to 13-5 and are 5-1 against the ECC.

After falling behind 4-0 in the opening seconds, the Dolphins answered with an 8-3 run to go in front, 10-8.  Five early points by Ashley Lambert helped the Dolphins recover quickly from the slow start, but the Firebirds proceeded to go on a 7-0 run.  Trailing 15-10, the Dolphins scored the final four points of the opening quarter to make it 15-14 after one.  Kyra Rose continued her busy offensive game into the second quarter as the Dolphins cut a five-point UDC lead to three with just over six minutes remaining before halftime.  However, the Firebirds scored five straight to take their largest lead at eight points.  UDC would match that lead on two separate occasions before the half, but CSI was able to remain within striking distance from the free-throw line as the Dolphins went into half trailing, 37-31.

The CSI offense was ignited early in the third quarter by Elizabeth Lofaro who scored eight in the first five minutes of the period to bring the Dolphins back within two.  Despite the CSI surge, the Firebirds did not relinquish the lead and they ended the third period exactly where they started it, leading by six.  The Dolphins slowly fought their way back for the first half of the fourth quarter finally tying the score at 58 on Lofaro's third three-pointer of the game.  Once again, the Firebirds would score five straight to regain the lead, but the Dolphins tied the score at the line with 1:44 to go.  The Dolphins continued to feast from the line and tied the score on free-throws a second time with 1:07 left.  However, CSI would not register another made field goal and a late turnover leading to a Firebirds score helped clinch the UDC win, 73-69.

Alarcon and Ashley Lambert both scored 20 points and Lofaro and Rose each finished with 11.  In addition to a huge steal late, Destiny Ryles led the Firebirds with 22 points in the UDC win.  Most notable in the box score was the massive free-throw tally as the Dolphins attempted 46 free-throws to UDC's 22.  The Dolphins hit 34 of those, but this still wasn't enough to overcome their late deficit.

The Dolphins will be back at home on Wednesday night when they face Mercy University for the second time this season at 5:30 PM.
