JOHNSON GAME-WINNER CAPS OFF HUGE DOLPHINS COMEBACK IN WIN OVER MERCY, 73-71

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team put together a 22-point comeback win earlier tonight as they defeated the Mercy University Mavericks on a game-winner by Kaia Johnson in the closing seconds of a 73-71 victory.  The Dolphins improve to 6-11 on the season with the victory and are now 3-4 against the East Coast Conference.  With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 10-8 on the year and are now 3-4 in conference play.  The CSI win also earns the Dolphins a split of the season series against the Mavericks.

The Dolphins took an early 2-0 lead but would go nearly six minutes before they scored again.  During this time, the CSI defense limited the Mavericks to just nine points, and Mercy led 9-2 with inside of four minutes to play in the opening quarter.  The Dolphins ended a scoreless stretch with 3:51 to go in the period, but Mercy quickly surged ahead by double-digits for the first time late in the quarter.  The Mavericks led by twelve after one and scored the first nine points of the second to go ahead by 21.  After falling behind by a game-high 22 points, Ashley Lambert ignited the CSI comeback with three consecutive threes during a three-minute stretch.  The Dolphins proceeded to end the half on a 23-11 run and cut the Mavericks lead to ten heading into halftime.

After facing constant ball denial and double teams throughout the first half, Jenalyse Alarcon came out strong in the second half.  She opened the third by scoring 11 of the first 13 Dolphins points to help CSI cut the lead down to one.  After the teams traded baskets for several minutes, the Dolphins took the lead for the first time with under two minutes remaining in the quarter.  The Dolphins would hold that lead for the remainder of the period and entered the fourth leading by one.

Mercy led briefly early in the final quarter, but the Dolphins responded with a scoring run that put them ahead by eight.  The CSI lead would not go below four until the final 90 seconds of the game when a pair of free-throws brought Mercy back to within two.  Leading 71-69, the Dolphins were whistled for an offensive foul with 22 seconds remaining.  This set the stage for a game-tying layup by Jaclyn Stanavich.  With the score tied at 71, Kaia Johnson attacked the basket and banked in a game-winning runner along the baseline to give the Dolphins a much-needed conference win, 73-71.

After being held without any points in the first half, Alarcon scored 17 in the second half.  Kyra Rose also delivered a strong scoring effort off the bench with 15 points and both Lambert and Johnson scored 11.  Stanavich led Mercy with 23 and Angelina Barrera registered a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double.

The Dolphins will begin a lengthy stretch of road games on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas when they visit the Spartans at 1:00 PM.
