Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS PULL AWAY FROM MERCY IN SECOND HALF FOR THIRD STRAIGHT CONFERENCE WIN

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team extended their conference winning streak to three games earlier tonight as they defeated the Mercy University Mavericks, 96-81.  The Dolphins are now 12-6 on the season with a 6-1 record in conference play.  The Mavericks drop to 1-16 on the year and remain winless against the conference at 0-7.  The Dolphins complete a sweep of the season series against the Mavericks with the win.

The Dolphins got off to a slow start offensively and trailed 7-4 three minutes into the first half, but from there, CSI found their stroke from the outside.  A JJ Chestnut three-pointer tied the score at 7-7 and was the start of a 15-0 Dolphins run.  This put the Dolphins ahead by twelve, but Mercy would slowly work their back before ultimately taking the lead, 28-27.  The Mavericks lead was short-lived, and once the Dolphins went in front 29-28, they would never trail again.  After taking the lead, the Dolphins ended the first half on 14-4 run and took a 43-32 lead into halftime.

The CSI momentum carried over into the second half as the Dolphins quickly extended their lead to 14 out of the locker room.  However, a 7-0 Mavericks run trimmed the lead down to 7.  From there, Bryce Waterman and Chris Clancy knocked down back-to-back threes to end the Mercy scoring run.  Clancy then proceeded to add two more threes to put the Dolphins in front by 15, and CSI extended that lead to a game-high 22 points soon after.  Once ahead, Messiah Mallory's scoring and defense kept the Dolphins comfortably in front as CSI cruised to a 15-point win, 96-81.

Mallory led the Dolphins with 22 points and added 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.  Clancy finished with 20 while shooting 6-9 from beyond the arc, and the Dolphins shot nearly 52% as a team from distance.  Despite strong shooting numbers, the Mavericks were never close beyond the midway point of the second half.  Taj Chiles led Mercy in scoring with 23 and was one of four Mavericks who finished in double-figures.

The Dolphins begin a stretch of three straight conference road games on Saturday when they battle St. Thomas Aquinas for the top spot in the East Coast Conference on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
