Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO POST UNIVERSITY IN CLOSING SECONDS, 67-66

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team suffered a heartbreaking defeat earlier tonight as they let a fourth-quarter lead get away in a loss to Post University, 67-66.  The Dolphins fall to 5-8 on the season and the Eagles move above the .500 mark at 6-5.  Post also takes a 3-0 lead in the all-time series with their second win over the Dolphins at The Tank in three meetings.

The two teams came out red-hot in the opening quarter and traded baskets for much of the period.  Tijanae Simmons hit a pair of three-pointers for the Eagles and Dana Phelan connected on two threes for the Dolphins as each finished the quarter with a share of the lead in scoring for their respective team.  Kaia Johnson also provided CSI with an early offensive spark and scored 6 points in the first 10 minutes.  Leading 22-19 after one, the CSI defense began to make its mark on the game in the second as the Dolphins held Post to just 11 points and extended their lead to 8 entering halftime.

The Dolphins defense continued to stifle the Eagles throughout much of the third quarter and the CSI lead grew as large as 15 points.  Jenalyse Alarcon and Kyra Rose each gave the Dolphins another boost both at the offensive end and on the glass as CSI built their largest lead of the game.  The Dolphins would lead by 11 entering the fourth, a lead they held until the 4:55 mark in the final period.  However, a 4-0 Post run quickly cut the lead to 7 before a Rose free-throw put the Dolphins back in front by 8.  On the next Post possession, Maya Klein converted a four-point play which was immediately followed by a Dolphins turnover.  Another Eagles basket cut the lead to 2, and after another stop, Post tied the score at 62.

With the score even, Johnson attacked the basket and scored to give the Dolphins the lead back.  This lead would be short-lived as Dede Stevenson answered with a go-ahead three-pointer to make it 65-64 with 21 seconds remaining.  Rose then put the Dolphins back in front with another layup leaving just 12 seconds on the clock.  Unfortunately for the Dolphins, this would be the last time they would lead as Roxkel Washington connected on a game-winning turnaround jumper in the paint with under 5 seconds to go.  Without a timeout, the Dolphins would not get off a quality shot as they went on to lose, 67-66.

Five Dolphins scored in double-figures and Alarcon delivered a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.  Stevenson led the Eagles in scoring with 18 including her late go-ahead three-pointer.  The Dolphins finished the game just 12-23 from the free-throw line, a stat that would prove costly as they ultimately lost by just a single point.

The Dolphins will play their next game on Monday night when they travel to Bentley University for a 5:00 PM matchup.
