Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS SURRENDER LEAD LATE IN LOSS TO BRIDGEPORT, 80-73

Bridgeport, CT - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team ended their five-game stretch of non-conference games with a loss earlier tonight as they fell to the University of Bridgeport, 80-73..  The Dolphins drop to 9-6 with the defeat and the Purple Knights even their record at 7-7.  Bridgeport also remains perfect against the Dolphins as they have now won all three meetings with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins fell behind 8-2 in the opening minutes, but did well to respond quickly and even the score at 14.  Leading the CSI resurgence at the offensive end was Bryce Waterman who connected on a pair of early threes to help the Dolphins erase the early deficit.  Once the score was tied, the Purple Knights responded with another scoring run to go ahead by 7, but CSI would shift momentum back in their direction.  After falling behind by as many as 9, the Dolphins surged ahead in the closing minutes of the half and headed into the locker room on a 15-4 run leading 43-41.

After halftime, the Dolphins continued to slowly build their lead and went in front by as many as seven following a JJ Chestnut three-pointer.  Bridgeport would trim that lead all the way down to one with 13:36 remaining, but the Dolphins would grow the lead to ten for the first time less than five minutes later.  Leading 67-57, the Dolphins began to struggle at the offensive end which allowed the Purple Knights right back into the game.

Ten straight Bridgeport points tied the score before Waterman gave CSI the lead back on a jumper with 5 minutes remaining.  Waterman would tie the score again, this time at 71-71, two minutes later, but this would be the final CSI field goal until the closing seconds.  The Purple Knights would score back-to-back baskets followed by a CSI possession which saw two missed shots and a offensive foul called against the Dolphins.  After two Bridgeport free-throws gave them a six point lead, the Dolphins would end their scoring drought with 22 seconds remaining.  However, this would be the last time the Dolphins scored as they went on to lose, 80-73.

Waterman led the Dolphins with 17, Jordan McAllister had 16, and Chestnut had 11 before fouling out.  Samuel Desouza led the Purple Knights with 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to record a double-double.  He was one of four double-digit scorers for the Purple Knights.  Remarkably, the Purple Knights were able to secure the win despite shooting just 1-15 from three-point range.  Though they did not shoot well from the outside, they held a prolific CSI offense to just 5-23 from distance and forced 20 CSI turnovers.

The Dolphins will have two days off before they return to conference play on Friday when they visit Daemen University at 7:30 PM.
