ALARCON REACHES 1000 CAREER POINTS IN CSI LOSS AT BLOOMFIELD, 72-67

Bloomfield, NJ - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw Jenalyse Alarcon make history earlier tonight as she reached 1000 points for her career in the team's game at Bloomfield College.  Despite another strong effort from the senior, a late CSI comeback bid fell short in the final quarter of a 72-67 defeat.  The Dolphins are now 1-2 on the season following the loss, and the Bears improved to 2-1 with the victory.  Bloomfield also takes a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against the Dolphins.

The Bears jumped out to an early four-point lead, 6-2, but neither team would lead by more than a single possession for the remainder of the opening quarter.  It was during the first 10 minutes that Alarcon would reach the 1000-point mark for her career as she scored in the closing seconds of the period to put the Dolphins ahead by three.  CSI would open the second with six straight points to go in front by nine, but the Bears would respond with a 12-3 run of their own to tie the score at 25.  The Dolphins would quickly jump ahead by four once again, but CSI would score just four more points leading up to halftime as they went into the break trailing 36-33.

The Bears would grow their lead to fourteen at the start of the third quarter with eleven straight points to begin the second half.  That lead would then grow to fifteen entering the fourth, but the Dolphins would not go down quietly.  Trailing by eleven, Dana Phelan scored eight consecutive CSI points to keep the deficit from getting any larger.  From there, the Dolphins tied the game behind a 10-0 run punctuated by a game-tying layup from Alarcon.  Consecutive threes by the Bears stifled the CSI momentum and put Bloomfield back in front by six, but Phelan answered with her third three of the quarter to make it a one-possession game.  Following a Bloomfield turnover with less than 50 seconds remaining in a three-point game, the Dolphins failed to score.  Now forced to foul, CSI would not get any closer than four the rest of the way as they fell by a final score of 72-67.

Alarcon led the Dolphins in points with 21, her third straight game leading CSI in scoring.  The senior also grabbed 14 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.  Phelan had 19, a scoring total bolstered by her three fourth-quarter three-pointers.  Amber Abusbeih also finished in double-figures with 11, and she went to the line ten times as well.  As a team, the Dolphins shot just 4-22 from beyond the arc, and all four makes belonged to Phelan.  The Bears also shot poorly from three-point range, just 8-30, but they were able to overcome 24 turnovers by shooting north of 41% from the field.  The Dolphins attempted more than twice as many free throws as the Bears, but CSI finished just 15-28 from the line.  The Bears held the advantage on the glass as they won the rebounding battle 53-39.

The Dolphins continue a stretch of three straight non-conference road games on Saturday when they visit Post Univeristy.  Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
