Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS HAND BRIDGEPORT FIRST LOSS BEHIND STRONG SECOND HALF, 85-81

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team handed the University of Bridgeport their first loss of the season earlier today as the Dolphins came from behind in the second half to knock off the Purple Knights, 85-81.  The Dolphins even their record at 2-2 with the victory and the Purple Knights fall to 3-1 with the defeat.  The win for the Dolphins is their first in program history against the Purple Knights in four meetings.

The Dolphins struggled with turnovers for much of the first half, but CSI led by as many as five points during the final eight minutes of the first half.  However, the lead slowly got away as the Dolphins were quickly approaching 20 turnovers before halftime.  The Purple Knights would push their lead as high as nine points, but the Dolphins remained within striking distance behind 17 first-half free throw attempts.  They made 14 of those 17 tries, but the full-court press of the Purple Knights helped them build a seven-point halftime advantage.

The Dolphins cleaned up their turnover issues in the second half, and momentum immediately began to shift in their favor as a result.  CSI continued to frequently visit the free throw line as well, and despite a very poor shooting performance in the half, it took the Dolphins just over six minutes to regain the lead.  The go-ahead basket came on a Justin Zieris three-pointer, the first make in a series of nine straight points for the senior.  This pushed the CSI lead to seven, a lead that soon grew to nine on a pair of Messiah Mallory free throws.  That lead was the largest of the game for the Dolphins, but the resilient Purple Knights would not go away.  Bridgeport slowly worked the deficit back down to two with five minutes remaining, but the Dolphins never allowed them to take the lead.  Like the Dolphins, the Purple Knights shot very poorly in the second half, and a series of late-game stops for the CSI defense closed out an 85-81 victory.

Zieris led the Dolphins in scoring with 19 and Mallory recorded a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.  Both also visited the free throw line eight times, and the Dolphins attempted exactly 17 free throws in each half.  Asa Kone, Shamar Latty, and Aaron Goldstein all scored in double-figures as well.  In addition to free throw attempts, the other area where the Dolphins held a significant edge was on the glass.  The Dolphins outrebounded the Purple Knights 44-28 and outscored Bridgeport 26-18 on the fast break.

The Dolphins will be back on the road for their next game on Wednesday as they visit Post University at 7:00 PM.
