Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS COME FROM BEHIND TO KNOCK OF SETTERS IN OVERTIME, 66-64

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team came from behind to secure their third straight win in overtime earlier today as they knocked off Pace University in overtime, 66-64.  With the win, the Dolphins improve to 4-2 on the season.  The Setters fall to 1-5 on the season with the defeat.  With the CSI win, the Dolphins even up the all-time series at 2-2.

The two teams traded leads early in the first quarter, but the Setters were able to extend their lead to five led by the scoring of Shanice Sinclair.  Sinclair scored eight in the quarter, but the Dolphins did not let the deficit grow any further than five and ended the period trailing by just two.  The Pace lead grew slightly midway through the second quarter, but the Dolphins were frequent visitors to the free-throw line and continued to force the Setters into turnovers.  This kept CSI within striking distance, and after scoring the final four points before the break, the Dolphins went into the half trailing by just three.

The Dolphins continued to make a push for the lead in the third quarter, but Pace always delivered a response.  The Dolphins would pull to within one possession twice, but Pace extended their lead to five entering the final quarter.  After struggling from the field for much of the first three quarters, the Dolphins saved their best offensive effort for the fourth.  Jenalyse Alarcon and Kyra Rose helped spur a CSI comeback behind the scoring in the paint and from the charity stripe.  The Dolphins shot 50% in the final quarter and 10-12 from the line on their way to going ahead by as many as five points.

Now trailing for the first time since the opening minutes, Pace responded with an 8-0 run to go ahead by three.  However, the Dolphins had possession trailing by just one with seconds remaining.  A CSI turnover and subsequent foul then sent the Setters to the line where they went 1-2.  This left the door open for the Dolphins, and Jenalyse Alarcon drew a foul with just three seconds remaining.  At the line with a chance to tie, the senior hit both clutch free throws and sent the game to overtime.  Alarcon would add six more points in overtime, including a pair of go-ahead free throws with 18 seconds remaining, as the Dolphins held on to win by two.

Alarcon led CSI with 21 points, her fourth 20+ point game of the season.  Rose added 17, and Noemia Massingue finished with 12.  CSI attempted 36 free throws in the game, and the Dolphins forced 26 Pace turnovers.  In the end, it was the free throw shooting of the Dolphins that was the difference in the game as Pace attempted 19 fewer free throws and hit eleven fewer.

The Dolphins are back home on Tuesday night when they host Dominican University of New York at 5:30 PM.
