Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SECOND HALF SURGE POWERS DOLPHINS PAST FRANKLIN PIERCE IN SEASON OPENER, 72-47

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team opened their season earlier as they began the 2024 Conference Challenge with a game against Franklin Pierce University.  After trailing by one at the break, the Dolphins surged ahead for good in the second half as they went on to defeat FPU, 72-47.  The Dolphins open the season 1-0 ahead of tomorrow's matchup with Holy Family University.  The Ravens drop to 0-1 ahead of their second game against the University of the District of Columbia tomorrow.

The Ravens got off to a strong start as the Dolphins worked to overcome the size advantage of the Ravens early in the first quarter.  However, a four-point FPU lead quickly turned into a lead as large as seven for the Dolphins.  Jenalyse Alarcon and Alexa Quirolo helped the Dolphins erase the early deficit, but the Ravens slowly worked their way back in front during the second quarter.  The Dolphins led by as many as seven in the second, but an 8-0 Ravens run put Franklin Pierce back in front by one heading into halftime.

Though the Dolphins fell behind, newcomer Amber Abusbeih never let the deficit grow larger than one.  Alongside Alarcon, the duo combined to score eleven straight CSI points, and the Dolphins went in front by eight.  The CSI run continued behind a series of Ravens turnovers and transition baskets, and the Dolphins went in front by as many as twelve in the third.  The CSI run continued into the fourth, and the Dolphin lead grew as large as 25.  The Ravens would never get within 20 again, and CSI opened their season with a 25-point win.

Abusbeih reached 1000 career points with her offensive outburst in the third quarter, and Alarcon is now 21 points away from 1000 following her 25-point effort.  Joining them in double-figures was Dana Phelan who helped spur the first-half Dolphins run with three straight makes.  Quirolo finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds in her CSI debut, and the Dolphins scored 34 points off of 25 FPU turnovers in the win.

The 2024 Conference Challenge continues tomorrow with the Ravens facing UDC at noon and the Dolphins facing Holy Family at 2:00 PM.
