Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS CAN'T OVERTAKE PANTHERS IN CLOSING MINUTES OF NON-CONFERENCE DEFEAT, 70-65

Garden City, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team fell just short in the closing minutes of their non-conference matchup with Adelphi University earlier tonight.  After the Dolphins led by as many as ten on two separate occasions, Adelphi came from behind to take the lead with just over 11 minutes to play.  From there, Adelphi held the lead for the remainder of the game to improve to 9-4 on the season.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 4-6.

The Dolphins quickly jumped out to a six-point lead in the opening minutes helped along by a pair of three-pointers from Blake Wilson.  That lead would grow as large as seven, but a 12-0 Panthers run put Adelphi in front, 21-16.  Behind threes from JJ Chestnut, Wilson, Messiah Mallory, and Aaron Goldstein, the Dolphins surged in front by ten with 2:30 to play before halftime.  However, Adelphi would close the first half scoring the last four points and the Dolphins took a six-point advantage into halftime.

The Dolphins extended their lead back to ten points early in the second half, but once again a prolonged Panthers run put Adelphi in front.  A 15-4 stretch in favor of the Panthers gave them the lead with 11:14 to play, and that lead would grow to eight with 9:07 remaining.  A three from Mallory pulled the Dolphins to within one with 2:18 left, but the Panthers answered with an Al-Fatir Connor layup to go back up three.  Chestnut then brought the Dolphins within two a second time with 32 seconds to play, but a late Dolphins turnover in a three-point game allowed the Panthers to clinch the win from the free throw line, 70-65.

Chestnut led the Dolphins in scoring with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.  Goldstein, Wilson, and Mallory all finished in double-figures as well, and Mallory was just one rebound shy of a double-double.  Four different Panthers scored at least 14 points led by Connor with 16.

The Dolphins will resume conference play on Saturday afternoon when they visit the University of the District of Columbia.  Tip off is schedule for 3:15 PM.
