Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

STRONG FIRST HALF SHOOTING POWERS DOLPHINS TO ROAD WIN OVER UDC, 84-79

Washington, D.C. - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team picked up their second conference win of the season earlier today as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia, 84-79.  With the win, the Dolphins are now 5-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  The Firebirds fall to 3-7 on the year and 1-2 against the ECC.  With the win, the Dolphins even up the all-time series at 4-4 and have now won three straight games against the Firebirds.

The Dolphins got off to an incredibly strong start shooting and went on to shoot over 53% from both the field and three-point range in the first half.  Blake Wilson continued his recent stretch of prolific outside shooting with a trio of first-half three-pointers, and Messiah Mallory scored 12 points in the first twenty minutes.  Mallory also had seven rebounds before the break and the CSI defense forced 10 first-half UDC turnovers.  Despite a great start from the field, the Firebirds only trailed by eight heading into halftime due in large part to shooting over 53% in the first half.  Like Wilson, Tevin Curtis also had three first-half three-pointers for the Firebirds, and he had 15 points on 6-9 shooting heading into the intermission.

The Dolphins did not shoot the ball nearly as well in the second half, but during the final 20 minutes, it was their defense that allowed them to maintain the lead.  With 12:14 remaining, the CSI lead grew to 14 points, their largest lead of the game.  However, the Firebirds responded with an 11-1 run, and just five minutes later the CSI lead was cut to four.  Ahead by just two possessions, Wilson quickly pushed the CSI lead back to nine with back-to-back baskets.  With under four minutes to play, the Firebirds cut the CSI lead to three, but neither team would score for the next two minutes.  Finally, the Dolphins went back up by two possessions with 1:47 to play.  Once again, UDC answered with another score to make it a three-point game, but this would be the last time they would get that close.  Mallory would deliver the dagger with a late three, and the Dolphins would close out the win from the line.

Mallory led the Dolphins with 20 and 11 rebounds.  Wilson finished with 16 points on 5-6 from the field and 4-5 from beyond the arc.  Asa Kone also finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.  Curtis led UDC with 25 and was one of three Firebirds to score at least eleven points.

The Dolphins will return home on Wednesday when they take on Pace University at 7:00 PM.  Ahead of the game, the Dolphins will recognize the career of 1000-point scorer Christian Taylor who will have his name added to the list of 1000-point scorers in The Tank.
