DOLPHINS EARN SECOND CONFERENCE WIN IN FIRST-EVER REGULAR SEASON VICTORY OVER UDC

Washington, D.C. - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team earned their second conference victory of the season earlier today as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia, 62-54.  The win improves the Dolphins to 7-4 on the year and 2-1 against the ECC.  The Firebirds fall to 2-8 and are now 1-2 in conference play.  The win for the Dolphins is their second straight and their first-ever against UDC in the regular season.

The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes, but the Dolphins would go on to build a lead as large as five in the opening quarter.  CSI built that early lead behind the scoring of Dana Phelan who got off to yet another strong start with eight points in the first ten minutes.  The junior connected on a pair of threes in the first and added one more in the second as well.  Despite Phelan's strong start from the outside, the Dolphins shot poorly in the second, and UDC would take the lead back with just over five minutes to play before halftime.  The Firebirds would surrender the lead briefly, but UDC would ultimately take a four-point lead into the locker room.

UDC went ahead by as many as six in the third quarter, but the Dolphins ended the period on a 15-5 run.  Leading the charge was Alexa Quirolo who scored seven in the quarter, and the Dolphins would lead 43-39 entering the fourth.  With 7:22 remaining the Firebirds would pull to within two for the first time in the quarter.  However, the Dolphins extended their lead back to seven with under five minutes to play.  A late three by Tori Williams cut the lead back to two, but Amber Abusbeih answered with a three of her own to extend the CSI lead back to five.  The late three by Abusbeih effectively closed the door on a potential UDC comeback, and the Dolphins held off the Firebirds to win, 62-54.

Phelan led the Dolphins in scoring for the third straight game with 18 points, and both Jenalyse Alarcon and Quirolo finished in double-figures.  Alarcon and Phelan each had nine rebounds as well, and Abusbeih finished with three steals to go along with her nine points.  Laci Johnson led UDC in scoring with 20, but no other Firebird finished with more than eight points.

The Dolphins will have eight days off before the take the court one final time in 2024 against the University of New Haven on December 22nd.
