Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

TIME RUNS OUT ON DOLPHINS COMEBACK IN LOSS TO DAEMEN, 54-48

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw a late-game comeback bid fall short in their conference opener earlier tonight as they lost to Daemen University at The Tank, 54-48.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 5-4 on the season and 0-1 against the ECC.  The Wildcats improve to 5-3 and open conference play at 1-0.  Daemen remains perfect in eight games against CSI, seven in the regular season and one in the playoffs.

The Wildcats opened the game with the first five points, and Daemen would go ahead by as many as twelve in the opening quarter.  However, CSI would get back to within single digits by the start of the second behind the scoring of Dana Phelan.  Despite a push late in the first and into the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Dolphins struggle to build momentum during the remainder of the first half.  This allowed Daemen to maintain a double-digit lead, and the Wildcats led by twelve at the break.

The third quarter saw Daemen go ahead by as many as fifteen, but much like the first quarter, the Dolphins began to make a run late in the period.  Phelan ended the quarter with another three for CSI and sent the game into the fourth with the Dolphins trailing by just ten.  Still trailing by ten with eight minutes remaining, the Dolphins pulled to within four behind a 6-0 run.  Daemen would never go in front by more than nine the rest of the way, but the Dolphins never got any closer than five during the final seven minutes.  Behind smothering defense and a distinct advantage on the glass, the Wildcats were able to hold of the CSI comeback for the six-point win, 54-48.

Phelan led the Dolphins in scoring with 23 points, and no other Dolphin scored more than seven.  Cecilia Lapertosa scored 10 for Daemen to go along with 17 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 3 steals.  Na'Veah Buntley led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points in just twelve minutes, but it was the Daemen defense and rebounding that allowed them to hold on in the closing minutes.   They held a 42-29 advantage on the glass, and the Dolphins shot only 30% from the field.

The Dolphins will play for the second time in three days on Sunday when they face D'Youville University at 1:00 PM.  Once again, that game will open an East Coast Conference doubleheader at The Tank.
