Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF D'YOUVILLE IN CLOSING MINUTES TO EARN FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team held off a late push by D'Youville University in the closing minutes of their first conference win earlier today.  The victory improves the Dolphins to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.  The Saints fall to 2-7 and are 0-2 in conference play.  The Dolphins now lead the all-time series four games to three and have won consecutive games against the Saints for the first time in program history.  Ahead of today's tip off, Amber Abusbeih was presented with a ball to commemorate her entering the 1000-point club during the first game of the season this year.  This follows a similar presentation to Jenalyse Alarcon ahead of the game against Daemen on Friday.

The Dolphins maintained the lead for much of the opening quarter, but it was a quick 5-0 run to end the period that sent them to the second ahead by six.  First, Alexa Quirolo connected on a three to put CSI up by four.  Next, Abusbeih scored at the basket to put the Dolphins ahead by six, 18-12.  The CSI lead grew to double-figures for the first time by the midway point of the second quarter, but five straight Saints points cut that lead in half.  The Dolphins would go ahead by ten once again a short time later, and they would take an eight-point lead into the break.

One of Dana Phelan's five three-pointers would extend the Dolphins lead to eleven early in the third quarter.  However, the Saints began the slow climb back into the game late in the period and worked their way back to within seven entering the fourth.  The Dolphins were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, and the Saints would pull to within four with 4:57 remaining.  Just one minute later, the Saint would cut the CSI lead down to two, but Phelan connected on another huge three to bring the lead back up to five again.  The Saints would pull to within three twice more, but the Dolphins would never allow them to get any closer than that as they held on for the 61-54 victory.

Phelan led the Dolphins in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points, and both Jenalyse Alarcon and Abusbeih finished with ten.  Only Anna Jankovic finished in double-figures for the Saints, and she also grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with her 10 points.  The CSI defense held the Saints to 35% shooting and limited them to just 3-25 from beyond the arc.

The Dolphins will be off until Saturday when they hit the road for a conference matchup at the University of the District of Columbia.  The Dolphins and Firebirds will tip off a rematch of their two opening round ECC playoff meetings at 1:00 PM.
