Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS HOLD ON IN CLOSING MINUTES FOR ROAD WIN AGAINST UDC, 82-77

Washington, DC - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team continues to close in on a first round bye in the ECC playoffs as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia earlier today, 82-77.  The Dolphins improve to 16-8 on the season and are now 10-3 in conference play.  With their tenth conference victory, the Dolphins have clinched a playoff spot for the second consecutive season.  The Firebirds drop to 8-13 on the year and are now 6-6 against the ECC.

The Dolphins got off to yet another great start and led 9-0 in the opening minutes.  Though UDC finally got on the board over five minutes into the first half, the Dolphins responded with a 12-2 run to take a 21-4 lead.  From here, CSI went cold from the field and UDC was able to trim the lead down to five as halftime approached.  The Firebirds would get as close as one on two separate occasions, but the Dolphins never relinquished the lead and reached halftime in front, 37-34.

It was a back-and forth start to the second half which saw the Firebirds slowly work their way towards tying the score at 46-46.  This time, the response from the Dolphins was a 9-0 run which saw JJ Chestnut score four and Chris Clancy score five.  The CSI lead would grow as large as eleven, but the Firebirds refused to go away down the stretch.  With one minute remaining the lead was cut to three, and with 27 seconds remaining a UDC three made it a two-point game.  Despite the late scare, the Dolphins earned the win without ever trailing in the game and won by a final score of 82-77.

Messiah Mallory was second on the Dolphins in scoring with 17 and led the team in rebounding with 12.  Defensively, he added 3 more blocks and a steal.  Clancy led CSI in scoring with 18 points in just 21 minutes.  As a team, the Dolphins shot below their averages for the season, but they were  to hold off the Firebirds late rally behind a much better shooting effort in the second half.

The Dolphins return home for their next game when they host Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday night at 7:30 PM.
