Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CONTINUES PUSH TOWARDS PLAYOFFS WITH WIN OVER MOLLOY ON SENIOR NIGHT, 78-71

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team won their second straight conference game earlier tonight as they defeated the Molloy University Lions, 78-71.  The Dolphins improve to 10-16 on the season with the win and are now 7-8 in conference play.  The Lions drop to 10-16 on the year and 4-11 against the ECC.  With the victory, the Dolphins take over the #5 seed in the East Coast Conference.  Currently, that sets them up for a rematch of their opening round matchup from the 2023 ECC playoffs against UDC.

The Dolphins honored five seniors ahead of tonight's game, Oyinkansola Oke, Brianna Moore, Kaia Johnson, Elizabeth Lofaro, and Ashley Lambert.  Each was in the starting lineup tonight as the team continued their push towards the postseason.  The Dolphins officially clinched a playoff spot last week, but the Dolphins still had a chance to improve their playoff seeding with a win tonight.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the opening quarter, but CSI jumped ahead by six late in the period and took a 14-10 lead into the second.  Dana Phelan then opened the second quarter with a three to put CSI ahead by seven, and Ashley Lambert extended the lead to 10 with a three of her own three minutes later.  Leading by six, the Dolphins inserted Moore back into the game and were quickly rewarded.  The senior scored eight of the next ten CSI points and helped propel the Dolphins to a twelve-point lead heading into halftime.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 16 early in the second half and appeared poised to run away the win.  Led by Samantha Muller, the Lions quickly worked their way back to within single-digits and cut the lead to nine.  Despite the sudden swing, the Lions would not get any closer than eight during the final six minutes of the third as CSI led 58-50 entering the final quarter.  Molloy scored eight of the first eleven points in the fourth to cut the lead to two, but the Dolphins would never surrender the lead.  Kyra Rose asserted herself offensively in the paint, and Lambert provided the outside scoring the Dolphins needed to secure the win.  CSI would go on to take the victory 78-71 earning a sweep of the season series from the Lions.

Lambert led the Dolphins with 15, Rose had 14, and Moore had a season-high 8 points.  Muller finished with 28 and Isabel Sanchez and Janel Moore scored 16 and 14 respectively.  As a team, the Dolphins shot over 47% from the field and held the Lions to just 39% shooting.  CSI was also 19-28 from the line while Molloy was only 10-13.

The Dolphins face CUNY rival Queens College in their season finale on Saturday at 3:00 PM and will then wait to see who their first round playoff opponent will be.  While the Dolphins are locked into the five seed, there is still opportunity for movement in the standings ahead of them.
