DOLPHINS BEGIN OPENING WEEKEND ON STATEN ISLAND WITH VICTORY OVER CALDWELL, 7-1

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team hosted their home-opener earlier today as they returned to Staten Island University Hospital Community Park for a matchup with Caldwell University.  The Dolphins picked up the 7-1 victory over the Cougars behind solid pitching and a double-digit hit total as they improved to 2-4 on the season.  The loss for Caldwell comes in what was their season-opener as they begin the year 0-1.  The Dolphins have now won four of nine games all-time against the Cougars and will have a chance to even the all-time series on Friday of next week when the teams meet again.

Ryan Kehoe started off strong on the mound for the Dolphins and hardly faltered throughout his six innings of work.  The CSI starter opened the game striking out the side and quickly received some early run support.  With one away in the home first, Bryan Birkhead tripled into the right-center field alley to give AJ Vigliotti and RBI chance.  The CSI designated hitter then drove in the game's first run with a groundout and put CSI ahead 1-0.  In the next inning, the Dolphins would strike for two more runs behind a two-out rally that culminated with a 2-RBI single by Michael Palermo.  In the third, the Cougars stranded two on base and the Dolphins would go on to leave the bases loaded.

The 3-0 CSI lead would stand into the fifth until the Cougars scored for the first time on an RBI double by Stephen Young Jr..  However, a caught stealing derailed the Caldwell rally and they would settle for just a single run.  Neither team would score in the sixth, but the Dolphins extended their lead back to three in the seventh when Birkhead reached on a fielder's choice that allowed a run to score.  Following a scoreless road eighth, the Dolphins scored three times on three hits in the bottom of the inning.  Anthony Sutera singled home the first run, Palermo plated another with a ground ball, and Michael Kehoe singled home one more to put the Dolphins ahead 7-1.  In the ninth, Chris Polemeni completed a scoreless effort for the CSI bullpen as he set the Cougars in order to close out a 7-1 Dolphins win.

Eight of the nine Dolphins who came to the plate in the game recorded a hit, and both Sutera and Palermo had two hits.  On the mound, Kehoe pitched 6.0 innings allowing just 3 hits and striking out 12.  In the final three innings, the CSI bullpen allowed no runs on just 1 hit and walked 2 batters.

The Dolphins will be back in action at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park on Sunday against Holy Family University.  That meeting will see the teams pay a doubleheader with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:30 PM.
