BASEBALL WALK-OFF WIN COMPLETES DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF HOLY FAMILY

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team wrapped up their opening weekend at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park earlier tonight as they swept a doubleheader from Holy Family University.  After scoring 11 runs in a game one victory on just six hits, the Dolphins scored the only run in game two on a Nicholas Rodriguez walk-off base hit.  The Dolphins even up their record at 4-4 with the two wins while the Tigers fall to 3-5 on the season.

GAME 1
The Dolphins fell behind early in game one as starter Gerard Santos surrendered a first inning two-run home to give the Tigers the early 2-0 lead.  However, Santos was not scored upon after the first and went on to pitch six innings allowing just one earned run.  CSI would respond by loading the bases in the first with nobody out, but the Dolphins failed to score.  They would finally break through in the third scoring four times, and they would do so with just one hit in the inning.

The Tigers were plagued by walks and errors all night and the Dolphins benefited from one free pass and a pair of errors in the fifth.  On top of that, CSI registered three hits in the inning and went on to score five times.  This put the Dolphins ahead 9-2, a lead that grew to 11-2 in the fifth.  That score stood until the seventh when the CSI bullpen allowed the only two runs scored against them on the night.  This wasn't nearly enough to get Holy Family within striking distance, and the Dolphins took the win 11-4.

GAME 2
The story of game two was the performance of the CSI pitching staff with men on base, and starter Christian Rice was forced to work through adversity in the first inning.  Holy Family would load the bases in the inning, but Rice was able to escape the jam with a strikeout of Dalton Turner.  The next major threat in the game was mounted by the Dolphins in the fourth when CSI loaded the bases with two outs.  However, Rodriguez popped up to end the inning and the game remained scoreless.

Rice would face another tough situation in the fifth when the Tigers put two on with nobody out.  This time Antonio Gautreaux came on in relief out of the CSI bullpen and escaped a bases-loaded jam.  After the bases were loaded on a CSI error, Gautreaux struck out consecutive batters to escape trouble.  Two innings later, three walks loaded the bases for the Tigers a third time, but Alex Martinez battled back from a 3-1 count to induce an inning-ending ground ball.

This set the stage for the Dolphins to walk it off in the home seventh, and CSI wasted no time mounting a threat.  Michael Palermo reached on a one-out infield single and stole second with still just one out.  Rodriguez, who earlier popped out with the bases loaded, then came through with a game-winning RBI-single to secure his team a sweep of the doubleheader.

Anthony Sutera had multiple hits for the Dolphins in game one and Thomas Marten registered a two-hit game in game two.  Owen Weber drove in 3 runs in the game one win as well, but the big story was the effort of the CSI pitching staff.  Through both games, the CSI bullpen allowed just two runs, and the Tigers left 10 on base during game two.

The Dolphins take the field for their next game on Wednesday when they face East Strousburg University on the road.
