CSI BASEBALL HEAD COACH MICHAEL MAURO EARNS 300TH CAREER WIN IN DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST DOMINICAN

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Baseball Team hosted their second doubleheader of the week at the CSI Baseball Complex earlier today as they split two games with Dominican University (NY).  In game one, the Dolphins erased a five-run deficit to tie the score at 5-5, but the Chargers opened extra innings with a four-spot to win 9-5.  In game two, the Dolphins took the lead early and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Chargers, 10-0.  The game two victory improved the Dolphins to 5-8 on the season and was the 300th win in the career of CSI Baseball Head Coach Michael Mauro.

The Chargers took the lead in the second inning of game one behind a four-hit second inning, two coming with two outs.  The inning began with a pair of base-hits and a Dolphins error before a ground ball and a two-out RBI single gave Dominican a 2-0 lead.  That lead grew to four in the third when Davin Keddell-Tuckey drove in two more with a 2-RBI single.  The Chargers then went in front by five in the fourth when David Knepper singled home the fifth Dominican run of the game to make it 5-0.

The Dolphins began their comeback in the fourth with a leadoff single, a pair of stolen bases, and a walk.  This brought Thomas Marten to the plate, and the senior delivered an RBI single to get CSI on the board.  Three batters later with two outs in the inning, Michael Palermo drove in two more with a single to make it 5-3.  In the next inning, a Chris Polemeni RBI double brought home Bryan Birkhead who just beat a throw to the plate to make it 5-4.  AJ Vigliotti then tied the score at 5-5 on a sacrifice fly moments later, and that score would stand through the start of extra innings.

The top of the eighth opened with two quick outs for the Chargers, but the rally that followed would put them ahead for good.  A two-out double and a walk got things started before an infield single would load the bases for Knepper.  Once again he came through for the Chargers with a 2-RBI single, and another run would score on the play as the result of a Dolphins error.  Knepper, who advanced to third on the error, came home soon after on a wild pitch to put Dominican ahead by four.  This put the game out of reach for the Dolphins as they would fall by a score of 9-5.

Game two saw the Dolphins rebound in a big way as they took the early lead behind three runs in the second inning.  Two walks and an error loaded the bases before the first CSI run came home on a double play grounder.  A second Chargers error then plated the second CSI run, but that was all the Dolphins would get in the inning.  After scoring without recording a hit in the second, the Dolphins scored three runs on four hits in the third.  The inning began with a Birkhead double followed by a single from Vigliotti.  Marten then recorded the first of two big CSI milestones in the game as he plated a pair with his 100th career hit, a 2-RBI double.

Ahead 5-0, CSI starter Gerard Santos didn't encounter any trouble until the fifth inning.  Consecutive two-out walks put two Chargers on, but Santos escaped the inning unscathed.  Dominican once again put two on in the sixth, but Santos escaped trouble a second time to keep the Dolphins ahead by five.  Looking for insurance in the home half of the inning, the Dolphins would double their lead behind a five-spot in the sixth.  An Anthony Sutera double got things started for the Dolphins, and CSI extended their lead to six on another hit by Palermo.  The next two Dolphins then reached to load the bases before a walk and a sacrifice fly plated two.  Ahead 8-0, the final blow was dealt by Vigliotti who singled home two more.  Santos then held the Chargers scoreless in the seventh to earn the complete game shutout as his head coach picked up career win number 300.

Mauro joined the Dolphins as head coach for the 2009 season and immediately came one win shy of 20 in his first season.  The following year, the team won 31 games and claimed their first City University of New York Athletic Conference Championship under Mauro.  This was the first of seven conference titles under his leadership as part of the CUNYAC in NCAA Division III, and the team won four consecutive conference championships from 2015-2018.  The following year in 2019, it was announced that the team would be moving to the East Coast Conference as part of the program's move to NCAA Division II.  Since then, the Dolphins have improved each season since implementing a full Division II schedule, and they are currently in their second season of eligibility for the playoffs in the East Coast Conference.
